I’ve been slightly troubled by Jim Farley’s recent comments about establishing a skunk works team in California to make a “low-cost EV”. That, coupled with the very lame 2024 mid-cycle refresh on the current Mustang Mach-E had me thinking that Ford may be abandoning the “higher end” EV segment and looking to come up with some kind of Fiesta-like EV. My fears seem to be bolstered by Ford’s continuing penchant to decontent vehicles, while not adding any new or innovative features. (For example, notice now they replaced the pretty elegant, smooth front turn signals on the Mustang Mach-E with simple blinkers.)
Anyone else have any thoughts?

I own a company that has approximately 60 vehicles. Many of our trucks are Fords, F 150s, 250s, 550s, and 750s. I have met Alan Mulally and have been a ford customer and watcher for 30 years. I have to say that Farley, is not the right leader. It is classic American management, an amazing engineer and leader re built ford from 2006 to 2014, and it is actually in the book that was written about this time, that Jim Farley was not up to the job of running the company, according to Mulally. I think Bill Ford is incapable of running the company, and possibly the only thing he did right in his tenure was to agree to shut his mouth and let Mulally fix the company. However he allowed this clown to take over. He is not up to it. As of right now, I have 7 commercial trucks on order since October 2022, I actually have an allocation of 5 per quarter, so of the 25 I was entitled to exactly zero have showed up. To make it worse, I bought an electric car from Ford that had a range of like 240 miles and a charge speed of like 120, yet the car only goes like 175 miles on freeway and charges at like 70. It is a fun and fast toy around town and I like it, but the people running Ford are the definition of misguided. Like our federal government they live in fantasy land. These electrics will not move American's around with reliability for decades, the grid is not up to it and the charging system is not durable, yet nobody seems to be paying attention. Sorry just a rant to follow up on your rant. If I could do over, i would probably buy a Tesla S, due to super chargers and car is awesome. but to travel and when going gets tough I drive my F 250. Which if you want one, it will take 7 months to get if you are lucky. They are maroons .

Well if they don’t make money making them, they won’t make them anymore.

But keep in mind, the car only came out 3 years ago. No one was really expecting much in terms of new features or mid cycle refresh until at least 2025.

2024 doesn’t count as a refresh, the changes are too minor. Perhaps they were thinking 2025 for a refresh, but recent sales have been so off-the-mark, I’d guess 2026 for a mid-cycle refresh.

I doubt we’ll see a whole new generation Mach-E this decade. Maybe if they feel they have to for improved battery tech and charging. My guess is the focus of R&D will be on getting more electric models out the door (like an electric Escape, Explorer, Expedition, coupe Mustang). I can’t see Ford dedicating the resources for a next-gen Mach-E until EV versions of more existing Ford and Lincoln models come out.

They need a full line of EVs.
So, they'll need EVs of various sizes and costs.
They need to copy Hyundai/Kia. What are Hyundai/Kia doing right that enables them to have a successful and profitable lineup of EVs and can continue to invest money into EV development?

For starters, Ford needs to have fast charging, 800V architecture. Just imagine if the Mach E had Hyundai/Kia's fast charging.

Hyundai/Kia are selling profitable gas versions of many of their EVs alongside them. Using the same platform for a gas and EV can help reduce costs significantly.

Hyundai/Kia's E-GMP platform is completely different from its gas car platforms.

I don't think the Mach-E has a sustainable platform, so a true refresh won't happen until they make a new battery platform.

The car was rushed out, and is, considering that, an amazing feat. But it has lots of drawbacks that you wouldn't have if they had more time. E.g., better thermal management (sorry to our Canadian neighbors), no 5 second limit, faster charging speed (e.g., larger bus bars, better contactors, higher voltage) etc. etc.

Also no heat pump :)

Do they use other similar parts though?

The gv70 and electric gv70 look darn near identical-
