SSM 52039 2021-2023 Mustang Mach-E, 2022-2023 F-150 Lightning/E-Transit - Unable To Achieve 100 Percent State Of Charge After HV Battery Module Replacement

Some 2021-2023 Mustang Mach-E, 2022-2023 F-150 Lightning/e-Transit vehicles may exhibit a concern where the vehicle is unable to achieve 100 percent state of charge immediately after high voltage (HV) battery module balancing and replacement. This may be due to the battery energy control module (BECM) adjusting the cell balance (conditioning) of the battery module and should be corrected within 22 days. If the vehicle otherwise functions as designed with no related diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) setting, this concern will be corrected automatically with no further actions required by the technician.

----End SSM----

When a cell module in the battery is replaced, it has to have a similar voltage to the rest of the pack so the cells can all work in unison. However, the voltage in the new module may be close but not exactly the same immediately after replacement, which could cause a reduced battery capacity indication. The cell balancing system will work over time to correct the voltage imbalance, which can take up to 22 days.

Effects on % display may also be seen if you suddenly change your usual charge level (e.g. always charged to 50%, but now charge to 90%) or if your vehicle is brand new and has not been fully charged previously. Continue to drive and charge the vehicle normally to the same % level for 2-3 weeks and the fluctuating % behavior should decrease. Temperature effects may also cause a 1% variation when driving starts, this is normal since battery capacity changes due to temperature (pack has changed temp since charging finished).

Hello,

I have a 2022 Premium AWD Extended Range with roughly 38,000 miles. I recently had a battery module (#5, I believe) replaced after I received a "Service Vehicle Soon" message along with Powertrain and HVB errors and charging faults. I received the car back on Friday and it seems to drive perfectly fine, but it has not been charging to its full capacity, which I assume has something to do with the SSM in this thread. More specifically, until this morning, it would only charge to 65% (after relatively short drives), and this morning it (after 110 miles of driving yesterday) it charged to 66% (which I know could just be due to temperature fluctuation). Interestingly, the range has been increasing (from the high 160s, to 178, to 184, to 197 today), though I know the range value is not particularly reliable.

Is this the type of behavior I should be experiencing in connection with this SSM? In other words, should I expect a gradual increase in my charging ability over 22 days? Or will it suddenly jump to a much higher capacity sometime within the 22 day period? Or is this atypical behavior that needs to be assessed by a dealership immediately?

I have been in contact with Ford, but my representative has not responded to me since I received the car back - so, basically I am trying to figure out how aggressive I should be in reaching back out to them or escalating the situation.

Thanks in advance!

That degree of imbalance would be an improper repair (not balancing cell modules before installation) so it needs to go back.

Thanks. That’s frustrating. Ford apparently wants me to wait weeks to bring it in again - do you think it is safe (for me and for the battery’s long term health) to drive in the interim?
