Ford Mobile Charging Unit - flashing or solid red error light

I use the Ford Mobile charger often either at home or on the road as a back up. As many has stated they receive error of red lights flashing or solid. I have had the same. I’d unplug wait 30 second and most of the time it will be fine. Some times I get an alert “charging failed”. None the less I called my not so friendly Ford Dealership and was told there are two CS (I think that’s what they called it). I’d have to bring the charger and the car for a complete inspection. I mentioned it only happens on this particular charger not VOLT EA etc. Snapped back and they said it does not matter. I questioned if you know there are problems in the unit why the car? Abruptly WE HAVE TO INSPECT THE CAR. Off to the dealership tomorrow

If charger doesn't display trouble lights until it is charging the car, they are right.

I plug in and within seconds it goes red. When the charger is not in use I also unplug it. When I plug in the wall at times it goes red before it’s even connected to the car

The trick is they need to plug it in and see it go red before plugging into the car, to just replace it. Otherwise, they need to see the joint action.

Make sure they are testing it on a NEMA 14-50 plug, if that’s what you are using. Many dealers don’t have them and the unit will test fine on the lower voltage 110 plug.

Yeah. This isn’t all that complicated. The dealership isn’t equipped to perform any sophisticated inspection or diagnosis of the mobile charger. They just need to plug it into the car, and if they can replicate the problem, you get a new charger. That’s it.

My dealership last year couldn't test mine properly because they didn't have a NEMA 14-50 and I had to escalate to the Ford BEV team. Once I did that they replaced it. Ford ALWAYS wants to have the car in the service department to diagnose it. Ford corporate will not reimburse the dealership if they don't.

Dealership called and technician can not recreate any failure ?. However being a valued member of the Ford family and abundance caution they want to keep my car another day

I just bought the portable Grizzl-E mini, it’s adjustable to 40amps, carry case, multiple adapters and programmable charging times. Even if Ford gives you a new evse, you will not be able to rely on it, I’ve read to many bad stories about the Ford charger. Stay away from lectron, it’s also junk! If you don’t want a portable, Ive had a ChargePoint set at 48amps for three years now with no problems at all.

Ford dealership says there can not find an issue. I said next time I’ll take a photo and a time stamp and email it.
