Moving soon and I am having a 60 Amp circuit put in for a hard-wired 48 Amp EV Wall Connector at the new home. Issue, all the ones I find are Smart systems. I currently use an older connector which is not smart. I have always used the FordPass app for charging times and departure times which will pre-condition the battery.

Do Smart chargers do the same thing or can the smart part be turned off to let the car call for when to charge and when to pre-condition?

Thanks for all your help!

Note: in most jurisdictions a 48A EVSE must be hard-wired. If they give you a 50A 14-50 outlet with 50A breaker, you are limited to 40A for the EVSE. Insist that that breaker and wiring can support 60A in case you have to convert to a hard-wired connection and want 48A charging.

I see I did not mention it will be hard-wired. I will add that to the OP now.

The Tesla Universal is not that smart and it'll still be good for your next ev if still working, 4 year warranty, nothing wrong with emporia( is very smart through), I've seen a grizzle.

Yeah, still the same charger recommendations you usually see also apply here. Emporia, Grizzl-e, ChargePoint, Tesla universal….

I control the charging schedule, maximum charge, departure times, etc... via the FordPass app. I only use my Emporia's smarts to keep track of how many KWh I used at various times, and I can also estimate what it cost me to charge during various periods. I can also change the maximum amperage for the charger via the Emporia app.

Probably the best dumb one is the ClipperCreek HCS-60, but it's $1000. You can always buy a smart charger and just not set up the WiFi, that might be cheaper these days.

Get them Emporia, it's well priced, reliable, heavy duty. You don't have to use the smart features. I like to change the Amps on the fly to a lower amp so it can fully charge the 12V battery.

Looking like I will be getting the Emporia once the electrician is ready for it.

Which amperage settings is best for the 12V?

The car handles the charging of the 12V battery. The amperage setting on the EVSE will have no bearing on it. I've seen my 12V battery charge at 27A when I'm driving. That's less than 400W. Over the course of an hour, that 0.4 kWh. A fraction of what the big battery would get on 32A, or even 16A.

The amperage setting for charging the HVB determines the length of time it takes to reach the state of charge selected. The longer it takes the longer the LVB is charged increasing the likelihood it will also maintain a desired state of charge.

I think it’s cool that the charging cable on the ChargePoint can be replaced with a NACS connector cable.
