The preconditioning while navigating issue is limited to CarPlay and is 100% on Apple. The lack of a manual button is a separate matter. Ford navigation to Superchargers is a bureaucratic nightmare — changes need to be made by Ford, Here, and Garmin.
The 2025 Lightning and Mach-E have Tesla Superchargers in the navigation system, so the software is ready. How long will it take them to push it to us? Who knows.

Judging by the number of early MMEs just now getting BC updates that are years old already, I'd counsel patience... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The conversation reminds me of this thought piece: https://insideevs.com/features/759153/car-companies-software-companies/

and this quote from it:

These are companies that have typically seen software as a problem to be solved, not a design to be experienced. Engineers at GM, Ford and Toyota have spent decades using an approach to software that was silo’d, minimally tolerant of risk and designed to remain unchanged through the vehicle’s 20-year life cycle.

Car play ultra takes over every pixel of the in car experience.

Climate controls, how speed is is displayed, where the hood latch is.

It seems ios is running the entire interface of the car. This sounds like an absolutely terrible idea. For safety critical applications, the hardware and software should be provided by the same company.

I can't imagine this is anyone's idea of a good thing.

Just putting the word ultra on something doesn't make it a good idea
OEM infotainment system will still be there. AA and CP have always just been an overlay of the OEM system, even if it were projecting Maps or music via the driver's instrument cluster or the HUD. It's just that now, Apple now has got access to more vehicle data and control units.

The question is, will CarPlay Ultra still be an option besides regular CarPlay for those who would like to continue using CarPlay in the current way.

Given Mach-E was, together with the Taycan, the only vehicle to allow Apple Maps to use the HV battery SoC, I think Ford's definitely in on this. Whether for the current SYNC 4/4A, that's a question.

The way that apple/carplay accesses the car's battery SOC doesn't really indicate much integration. It's not transmitted over the carplay connection (USB or wifi.) Instead, the iPhone gets the SOC information over the internet. So, instead of a "car -> carplay" data path, it's actually more like:

car -> 4G modem -> Ford server (fordpass) -> iphone data connection -> apple maps

In other words, the integration really isn't much of an integration, and it's certainly not Ford allowing carplay to access anything on the CAN bus.

They aren't even on Apple's list of car companies that have shown interest.
CarPlay Ultra can be ordered today today on 2025 Aston Martins in the US and Canada and Apple says Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis have now signed up in addition to already announced partners including Acura, Audi, Ford, Honda, Infiniti, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Polestar, Porsche, Renault, and Volvo. Those brands will make their own launch announcements in the future.

And Mach-E FE vehicles will be getting blue cruise 1.4 any day now.

I want CarPlay RELIABLE (not Ultra).

It works fine 9 times out of 10, but on a long roadtrip that 10th time can force you to the side of the road to reconnect and find where to charge next.

Ultra “harmonizes” the UX of the Car with Apple. I could care less if the fonts match.

I'm sorry, but CarPlayReliable (aka CarPlay RELIABLE) isn't and never was a real product. It was an April Fool's day joke from one of the apple fanboy websites.

I'd like this, but I'll probably have to buy a new car for it.

It baffles me the love affair people have with CarPlay. I own an Apple Watch and a house full of iPhones but people need to call it what it is - a flaky steaming pile of potential. No matter the car I’ve had with it or phone, it is not reliable in staying connected. Native Spotify app and ditch it as far as I’m concerned.

I actually kind of agree (but I have different gripes). I’m not fond of the current CarPlay UI and I rarely use CarPlay, except to listen to and respond to text messages (it does that well). Also, I will occasionally use it to listen to my music. I haven’t had any serious connectivity issues.
