Is this the usual amount of “bump steer”?

Since I got my car (2021 GTPE, used) back in March, I’ve noticed that the steering wheel likes to turn itself when going over bumps under 20-25 mph. I know some of this is normal, but does this seem excessive to anyone else with a GTPE?

My wife’s 2021 Select does not do this, but maybe that’s a difference between the GTPE and hers.

My GT doesn't do that. There is one very bad gravel road I drive to a park that requires 5 mph max but the steering wheel doesn't turn.

I don't recall my 2021 GT-PE having such severe steering feedback (which is not Bump Steer). I just took my 2024 GT out and 1-finger drove it over a bunch of utility hole covers and the steering feedback was tactile, but did not include a lot of wheel motion. I'm not sure as to why your car is doing this unless it has a bent tie rod that the repairing shop simply realigned rather than replacing with a straight part and aligning. ?‍♂?

Hmm, interesting theory, I’ll definitely ask about that. It’s going to the dealer next week to have the front suspension inspected, I read the 2021 models had a bad batch of CV joints but we’ll see. The first dealer I took it to tried to tell me it needed new struts after 29K miles, but had no reasoning for that other than wanting to start diagnosis with them because they weren’t covered under the warranty.

If you’re familiar with suspension, could you look at these photos the first dealer sent and let me know if you see anything that sticks out to you?

To me, it just looks like you're not hitting the speed bump square on, just a bit off... But I've been wrong before so take this with a grain of salt.

The photos don't seem to have anything out of whack. The CV joint issue on the 2021s was that they were loose, resulting in clunks when accelerating through suspension articulation or steering events. My 2021 developed a very quiet clunk out of the left front half shaft that was repaired under warranty at around 18K miles (just before I decided to get a 2024 GT instead). ??

@vsguru may be onto something there with his response. ??

Well it was just a regular bumpy road, no speed bump, but perhaps that’s normal. I still need to find out what’s causing that loud clunking over small bumps and the vibration at higher speeds.

Just an update for anyone having this issue and stumbles upon this, the dealer inspected it yesterday and believes it is due to bad CV joints / axle shafts in the front and is replacing them under the Powertrain warranty (my bumper to bumper is out).

I'll update this post once they've done the work!
