Will the Mach-E have traditional model years?

The boss gave me the green light today to buy a MME. I’m not in a huge rush to order. I’ve read and watched enough reviews to feel like I already know what I’m getting, but I still need a test drive to be sure and they haven’t arrived at local dealers yet.

Then there is the manufacturing delay. So I might not get one until this summer. So the question: if I cant receive one until summer 2021 at the earliest, should I wait for the “2022 model?” Will there even be such a thing? Or is Ford more likely to follow Tesla in abandoning the traditional yearly model approach?

There are definitely model years. If you want to wait until the 2022 MY is out then you'll have to wait until they start designating cars as such. I wouldn't worry about; order the car when you're ready to and whatever model year that is so be it.

Well, I mean, technically I think they’ve got to have model years based on when they are built, but will the calendar year have any significance for changes to the MME? Or could the Gen 1 hardware span 18mos or more?

I don’t see Ford dealers “clearing the lots” of 2021s for the “new 2022s.” Am I wrong? Is Ford going to follow the more traditional approach for MME?

The Mach-E will eventually fall into the pattern of model years starting in september or so, but for the 2021 MY that may or may not be the case. As for cars on lots, the 2021's are almost all sold out to customer orders, so there won't be many on dealer lots. Of course the dealer demo cars (called FCTP cars in Ford parlance) will be sold when they reach their mileage/time limits, but it is highly likely that only customer ordered cars that where not bought by the ordering customer will be on lots for the 2021 model year.

I work for Ford in salaried manufacturing engineering. Yes, we're doing traditional model years and anything else is just stupid and confusing to end customers who don't really know what they're getting. The first clause is fact, and the second clause reflects my opinion and not that of my company.

Well that’s a pretty definitive answer. Thank you. So if you place an order this fall and the build rolls into 2022, would the order automatically transfer to a 2022 model?

If they accept your order for a 2021, then they’ll still be making 2021 cars. They’ll cut off 2021 orders before switching to 2022. They won’t just automatically switch an order from 2021 model year to 2022.

I have to disagree here. No place on my MachE order on Ford.com does it state the model year I ordered. Much like ordering a Bronco I would wager later M.Y. 21 orders (now or soon) may get pushed to 2022 depending on configuration and availability.

I've been kinda wondering the same question. A dealer I spoke to said they had over 300 orders for the Mach E and that he somehow knew they were only getting the first 70 in 2021. Not sure how he could know that for sure...

But it lead me to wonder whether Ford would alert a buyer that his/her car would not arrive in 2021 before or during order placement. And for those who ordered late last year, what happens if their car isn't delivered in 2021? Will they be notified? Will they have an option to switch to a 2022 before production commences?

I don't know how much longer you could wait to expect a summer delivery. I will be curious to see for those ordering now how far out the delivery dates get pushed. I thought the 2021 MY is pretty much sold out other than cancellations.

Reservations are not orders. You did not order, you had a reservation. A reservation only gets you a car when a dealer converts it to an order.

Right now, the online system is an "add-on" on top of the current dealer ordering system.

Reservations with Ford were fully refundable. Order deposits being refundable are at the discretion of the dealer. You will need to check with your own dealer and get it in writing as to whether they consider an order deposit refundable. I am guessing the reservation/order deposit is still $500.

Reservation was a refundable $500, but wasn't the order deposit $1000?
As you state, order deposit refundability is subject to dealer policy.

Depends on the dealer. Ford recommended an order deposit of $500, but some dealers jacked that up to $1000 or more.
