Thought I would take the Mach E to the gym this morning. It’s only 1 mile away. Garage temperature was +5 C when I departed. Vehicle sat outside for 2 hours at gym. I remote started it for 10 minutes and when I got in to drive away. A message came up on the screen. “ Outside air too cold to heat interior of vehicle”. That’s a new one but then I’ve never driven it in such extreme temperatures before.

I've had success heating up faster and using less energy by enabling recirculate air. The car will switch back to fresh to prevent the car from fogging up so you have to keep re-enabling recirculate. I occasionally have to press the "max defrost" button if I see fog creeping up my windows, so be warned it can affect your vision. Something to try next time.

Hmmmm. I've started and driven my Mach E and Lightning at -40 and have never seen that alert. Must be new.

I don't use the remote start to prewarm the car when running errands because the headlights and Sync Screen illuminate. Here, at -40, it is not unusual for someone to jump into a warm vehicle that is running so they can drive in warmth to the next bar. One thing I have started doing recently, when it is below -25 or so and I am running errands - I leave the vehicle running but turn off the headlights and select the calm screen so I minimize the temptation of someone deciding to steal it. Unlike an ICE vehicle, there is no exhaust steam to highlight the fact the vehicle is idling. The heater uses a maximum of 4-5 kW per hour, so unless your HVB battery has a very low charge, you can "idle" for a very long time.

At -40 all the heater output is going to keep the battery warm enough to not shut down. Mach-E wasn’t designed to operate in those temps.

Yep, agree. And yet the Canadian Government has mandated by end of 2026 all new vehicle sales except for trucks, have to be BEV.

Why would anyone move to SE Michigan?:)
1) National Champions... Hail to the Victors Valient. ;)
2) Job
3) In-state tuition... (1/3rd the cost)
4) In-laws, that would soon need assistance, and wife an only child (6 years later they did).

-40 is insane (same number in Fahrenheit or Celsius, go figure). I have a hard time coping with the 40 degree weather I get a handful of evenings a year in the coldest part of winter in LA.

It might be wise to set up a gym at your house to avoid those temperatures. I understand going to work is necessary but put a treadmill in your house.

@Womps I’m just a bit south of you in Red Deer and had the vehicle parked outside while I was at the office for a couple hours, albeit at only -35.

Did about 20 mins of preheating and once I got in no sign of the "Outside air too cold to heat interior of vehicle" message fortunately. Only had a quick drive home, so that was my only

I did get a weird “accidentally unplugged“ message from FordPass after getting in.

Was scheduled for a drive to Edmonton tomorrow, and thankfully that's been cancelled, so I'll probably do more testing closer to home.
