Hi,

TL;DR - Is there an easy way to check if the Active Grill Shutters are connected (and reconnect it) without removing the Bumper and other parts?

We had severe hail storm last year and my MME was battered. After over 19K in PDR (insurance covered) and over 30 days in the shop, I got it back looking great. However, I have noticed that the Active Grill Shutters are not properly connected to the trim beneath and over time I saw the bottom trim pulling out of alignment. I reached the PDR shop that fixed my MME and like any great repair shop, they are not responding. I left it as-is since it is cosmetic. But, last week while trying to look at my HVB SoH, I ran diagnostics and found out that the Active Grill Shutter motor is not working. I suspect it might be the case of them not connecting the wiring harness. Is there a way to easily check out the wiring to see if it is connected or not?

Jack up the car and remove the lower cover. The blind installation will be visible

When you plug in the car to start charge, the active grill shutters will open and close. You can observe them during this timeframe.

They don’t open at all. After seeing the code on the OBD scanner saying the shutter motor isn’t working, I watched it a few times when I start charging —no movement whatsoever.

Hijacking the thread. Any idea what would cause one of the sides to not close all the way (opens all the way fine) based on the mechanism? It should all be linked mechanically?

Edit: answering my own question on why one shutter was working fine (driver) and the passenger was not closing all the way.

1) on my 23 GT, removing the bottom plastic cover/splash shield does not give you access to the shutters - there is another plastic hood/shield that wraps around the bottom, and i didn't want to keep disassembling more and more. Don't remove the bottom splash shield unless you're planning to take off the bumper cover.

2) You can pop the shutters out from the front carefully, and disassemble and re-assemble most of the mechanism. With a light, and a mirror or a phone camera, it's doable. The inside pins (actuator side) are much shorter than the outside ones, and that's the side easier to pop out first.

3) My specific issue was that the rod linking the passenger side shutters to the motor came off it's pivot (red mark) . No idea how it happened, but you can take off the shutters top 2 shutters on the passenger side, and with some force carefully get it popped back in on the pivot.

I finally had some time to check this on my 22 Select, and you’re right—the connector is shielded at the bottom. I tried popping out the shutters, but that proved difficult, and I didn’t want to risk breaking the plastic connectors. It looks like removing the bumper is my only option.
