Do you have old school electric heat in your basement that your kids cranked up and then never shut off? We've been there. A week later you open the basement door, its 90 degrees and you see a spike in the electric bill!

Also remember, its the summer time. If your electric company is like OG&E in oklahoma, they have summer rates and winter rates. Summer rates are a little more expensive. My bill from the middle of May to the middle of June was $231, which is on average for the summer prior to me purchasing my 2025 Mach-e. I pay roughly 14 cents per kwh. I'm not on any plans. I do not charge daily, I charge about once to twice a week depending on what is going on. My charging times are set to 9 pm - 5 am. I have my charger set to 48 amps when charging. My last statement said I only paid $6 for EV charging.

I looked at OG&E's smart hours for EV's. While they have listed its 6 to 8 cents to charge at night "off peak and super off peak", I would pay 32 cents per kwh during the day for peak usage.

I would recommand looking at your bill to see if your electric company tells you what you use the most electricity for. Mine is "always on" items.

I drive almost 1600 miles a month for work. My power is $0.078 per kwh delivered. My bill has went up by about $57 since I bought mine. My explorer in December cost me almost $900 drive 1700 miles.

I have it programmed to charge between 1am-6am. I looked on line and in eastern KY no EV plans.
That odd because I googled TOU plans and got this :

General Rate Context (Kentucky Power)
Following the recent Public Service Commission (PSC) decisions, Kentucky Power customers are facing some of the highest bills in the state.
  • Average Monthly Bill: Now around $194.13 (up about $10.76/month).
  • Rate Design: They utilize a declining block rate alongside a fixed meter charge.

2. Time-of-Use (TOU) Rates for EV Charging
Kentucky Power does not have a standalone, EV-specific rate, but they do offer an optional Residential TOU plan which works great for off-peak EV charging.
  • Off-Peak Rate: ~$0.10 per kWh
    • Summer: Anytime outside of 12:00 PM – 6:00 PM.
    • Winter: Anytime outside of 7:00 AM – 11:00 AM and 6:00 PM – 10:00 PM.
  • On-Peak Rates:
    • Summer Peak: ~$0.15 per kWh (12:00 PM – 6:00 PM).
    • Winter Peak: ~$0.11 per kWh (7:00 AM – 11:00 AM & 6:00 PM – 10:00 PM).

3. Regional Co-op Alternatives (Touchstone Energy)
If you get your power from a local Electric Cooperative (like Farmers RECC, Inter-County Energy, etc.) instead of Kentucky Power, ask them about the EV Off-Peak Charging Pilot Program.
  • How it works: You get a monthly bill credit for programming your Level 2 home charger to run strictly between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM.

4. Kentucky EV Power Tax
Just a heads-up for anyone charging on the go: Kentucky levies a state EV power excise tax of $0.032 per kWh. This is generally added to public commercial charging stations rather than your residential home bill.

it also says Eastern KY has some of the highest rates in the state.

I also googled how to sign up for TOU plan in your area. It’s not straightforward. But I’d start here:

Enrollment Steps
  • Online Request: Log into your personal portal via the Kentucky Power My Account Page to submit a service modification request.
  • Phone Enrollment: Speak directly to a utility representative by calling the official customer service line at 1-800-572-1113.
  • Meter Verification: The representative will verify if your property already has a smart meter installed; if it does not, a technician must be scheduled to install a single TOU meter. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Government & Regulatory Documentation [1]
Because Kentucky Power is an investor-owned utility, its structures are legally bound by state regulatory filings. [1, 2, 3]

All above is true. Your math isn’t math-ing. But one thing the above are NOT taking into consideration is that charges are not 100% efficient. 10kwh in is not 10 kWh into the vehicle. Personally I am not sure of the amount loss but it’s not a lot 5% maybe. So 10.5kwh in is 10 kWh into the car. And at the prices we are talking (less then .20 per kWh where you are) that 5% is a penny.

Was doing some math. User is either driving 150 miles a day on average and user is paying $0.55 kwh, sounds like they been going strictly to DC fast chargers not home charging.

If you had a car getting roughly 20mpg, driving 32 miles a day your gas would cost you upwards of $200 a month. And if you really are driving 150 miles a day causing a $176 increase in power from home, your gas would be roughly $1000 a month. Either case, your paying less with your EV on costs to drive it.

My electric bill went DOWN when I got my EV! Something is not right here with OP!

(ok, sure, I may have installed solar, and went to a tou use plan, but that's not really relevant information, is it?)

Check your power bill and look for something like "Power Cost Adjustment". With Puget Sound Energy, the rate for the May - June 2025 period compared to the May - June 2026 period, using approximately that same number of kWh, went from $2.40 last year to $33.26 this year. One way to avoid calling a rate increase a rate increase.

It cost me $86 to go 1358 miles last month (438 kWh). Thats the highest bill this year. In contrast, if I took my Honda Pilot that far at my average of 24 mpg, and gas at $4 per gallon (average, it’s higher in my area), it would cost $226. Saved $140. I charge overnight on a TOU plan.

I just looked at my usage. Comparing a full month to last year, I'm up 252kwh. I'm not sure what that is in $$, but I'm sure my budget bill will go up next year. A few charges were not in that off-peak sweet spot, but I've got that scheduled so it charges every time during off-peak. The off-peak at my location is 1AM to 6AM in the spring/summer.

Haven't done a lot of driving in June, but charged 3 times so far. Shown is the km added and session cost. Paying 3.8 cents per kWh on "Super Low Overnight" rate. Days from ChargePoint app.

Agree with earlier comments. Check with your electric company to see what program they have. Some will even install the level 2 charger for you and control your usage.

My service provider is Minnesota Valley Electric Cooperative. They facilitate the installation of a second meter that your level 2 charger is connected through. That meter has rates that are around 7 cents per Kilowatt between 10 PM and 6 AM. You can control that in the Ford App.

I am running 430 Kilowatts a month for around 1200 miles a month. Which cost MVEC $21.29 to generate and $13.06 to deliver and I got a $7.39 rebate. They also gave me a $150 rebate when I installed the second meter and did not charge me for the installation.

I will attach a copy of my bill. You will the see a minor EV Intermediate charge. That happens when I connect the car to the meter in the middle of the day and the charger starts charging until the Ford app turns it off.
