Am I doing something wrong regarding Cruise Control, Stop and Go, etc?

Hey Folks,

Recently I started using the adaptive cruise control or whatever its called for trips to my fathers house, I used to drive my truck out there but gas prices...

Anyway, there are about 5-7 miles of 4 lane road, so I engage the cruise control (far left button on steering wheel) and the car steers itself and maintains speed relative to the car in front etc.

BUT, if there is a red light with traffic in front of me I have to panic break every single time. Normally when I see traffic slowing down for a red light I would tap the breaks, let it coast down a bit then actually apply breaks to come to a slow even stop (actually I have something to ask about that below too), but with this cruise activated i feel like I am doing 65 until im 20 yards away and I SLAM on the breaks to come to a hard stop.

Have I done something wrong here?


Also, I have the emergency breaking turned to the lowest setting, but it still panics a few times a day, Im used to driving a full size pickup so i leave a little space between me and the car in front, but this thing goes off if Im 5 years away doing 5mph or less while actively breaking, not once has it even been close.

Help? Maybe? Wondering if my "grandpa" like driving is not aggressive enough for the MME

Make sure you have gap set to max, see below for OM ref.. If that does not mitigate the feeling you are playing chicken when approaching slower traffic, just use CC cancel to start slowing then resume when you are within gap setting and Adaptive will automatically maintain pace with traffic.

OP, you have several issues.

First, I never tap breaks in a car. Why would you do that? I do use my brakes, because they actually slow the vehicle.

Stop and Go works great in traffic. If you're driving 45+, and no car is close to you, but they are stopped at the light, yes, you will find a very abrupt deceleration is the norm. Follow the advice given above.

I assume the max gap is the 3 bars of distance? Thats what I use. Thanks for the second part.

Let me clarify, tap the break pedal, like to disengage cruise control? Not like applying force for actual slowing. The same way you disengage cruise in ICE vehicles for the past, hell my first vehicle with speed control was a 79.


Edit, even my 2017 pickup has the same method for disengaging, the button clears the setting and resume doesnt work at that point...

So, tap the pedal, not the actual brakes... symantics I suppose.

I always take over braking if I'm approaching stopped traffic or traffic that is going significantly slower. (e.g. I'm doing 65-70 approaching traffic doing 20.)

NEVER, NEVER, tap the BREAK pedal on any vehicle. You'll break the vehicle!

If you want to disengage cruise, you can tap the brake pedal or hit the X, then reengage when you're closer after you remove your foot from the brake pedal.

Press the cancel button to disregard instead of tapping brakes.

Also, much will depend on your drive mode and if you use 1 pedal driving.

To make it like a regular car, use whisper mode and 1 pedal off. If you drive in unbridled with 1 pedal, like I do, you have to get used to actually pressing the go "gas" pedal shortly after pressing the cancel cruise button or you'll end up slowing to quickly imo

THIS!!

@ShadowCVL the adaptive cruise is not going to work well if the traffic ahead is already stopped. This is the problem. You need to manually disengage cruise and manually brake in this scenario.

As others have mentioned, the cruise will slow very abruptly, too abruptly for my taste as well. If I am rapidly overtaking the car in front of me, and especially if they are stopped, I will use the X button on the steering wheel (or tap brake if I forget to use the button).

Yes, it can be rather sensitive.

The other question is what mode do you use and do you use One Pedal Drive? I use Unbridled 1PD. When I press the X button to cancel the cruise it will slow very nicely and will optimize the use of regenerative braking.

Once traffic goes, you can press the X button to resume the cruise to let it accelerate or you can accelerate and then resume.

Also, cruise works great in stop and go traffic. It will make the car slow, stop, and go again very well.
