Mishaal Rahman wrote this XDA article discussing HTML5 games on Android Auto (while parked). This also appears to be official from Google, not some hack. This is coming from a reputable source, so I'm confident this will happen at some point in the future.
Personally I couldn't care less about the gaming aspect in Android Auto, but if Google does move forward with this, video playback using the same restrictions could be next. It seems odd that playing games would come before playing video content. Regardless, I'm really hoping for this to come sooner than later, using my phone in the car gets the job done, but it would be so much better using the big screen.
