Actually, based solely on critical materials used, PHEVs are superior to BEVs because you get 3 cars at 90% of travel for the same resources you would get 1 car at 100% travel.

The problem is a lot of PHEV owners don't actually charge. They don't have a home charger (or only a 120v charger), and eventually it turns into an expensive mild hybrid system.

So on paper PHEVs are better. But in practice, I think BEVs are better

PHEVs may be a great solution for people that do a lot of travel over 200 miles per day and/or do not have access to L2 charging at home. Otherwise, I'd say the complexity of dual drivetrain, ICE maintenance, and long-term mechanical issues would steer me to BEV

I can't stand the fact that you have 2 power levels whether you are in EV mode or Hybrid unlike EV or ICE only vehicles. It's less than half the power in EV mode which can be dangerous.

It depends on your motivation, goals, and use case. In theory a PHEV sounds like a terrible set of compromises to me. In my admittedly limited experience driving one (Jeep Wrangler 4xE), that holds true. It wasn't fun to drive in EV mode. It felt underpowered in all situations. You still have to plug it in to get any benefit from the EV portion of the powertrain, and unless you are only taking very short trips you are still going to the gas station.

There are plenty of tradeoffs with PHEVs compared to EVs so not sure.

I have owned several of each (PHEV and BEV). A PHEV is a bad ICE and a bad BEV rolled into one. If you are okay with a bad version of either....then you get both for the price of one. :)

I think PHEVs make great "training wheels" for eventual switch to BEV.
