This might be a dumb question but here goes. I see lots of nice avatars that folks are using on this site and I would like to add an avatar photo to my profile. I went to add the photo and the system provides a circle that it seems the photo needs to fit inside of? No matter how I resize the photo, it is too large for the circle. Am I reading too much into this? The original photo size I tried was 400 x 282 pixels which the instructions seem to indicate is acceptable. Will my entire photo show up even though the circle seems to indicate it will not? Any tips will be appreciated!

If you've never used AI before, pick ChatGPT, Copilot or any other free one and upload your photo and ask it to make a 400x400 avatar image. You can then tell it additional changes you want to make it look good. Consider this your first practice with using AI.

Super weird. My avatar pic was taken with my DSLR and had to be down-sized a little bit in order to upload due to file size limitations, but it “just fit” into the circle. Perhaps try cropping your picture to center the image? 🤷‍♂️🐩

It's a license plate picture showing only the plate and if I crop it, it won't make sense to use it. If I make the pixel size much smaller, the quality deteriorates quickly. I've seen other license plates as avatars so it seems like there must be a way to use it. I can only get about half of the plate to show in the circle regardless of pixel size.

I had tried doing that earlier using Gemini but it didn't work well. So now I tried with Open AI and it did a little better. Now most of the plate fits so I'll try it that way.

So I guess I should have just gone with the original avatar as I now see that even though the entire thing does not show in the circle, all of it shows up when you post! Thanks everyone for your help!

The thing is Bob, the size (pixels) of the photo does not make a lot of difference. I have uploaded Avatar photos from 400 to over 7000 pixels. What does matter is how large the subject is in the frame of the photo that you want shown.

If the license plate takes up all of the photo then it won't fit in the Avatar circle like this:

With a license plate being a smaller subject in the photo, it will fit better in the Avatar circle.

Good point! It ended up working ok here but I want to use it in some other apps and the size is a problem so I'll have to make a photo similar to what you are suggesting. Thanks for the advice!

Looking at your current avatar pic it looks vertically stretched and offset to the top of the box. I bet if you edit the photo to include more blank space above the plate it would center better and be less vertically stretched. 🤔🐩
