The last time I checked, only 12 US states require a safety inspection.
Maryland only requires it when ownership of the vehicle changes. Virginia requires it every 1 or 2 (?) years.

Hi all,

I was looking at my MME today and noticed that a portion of my rear tail light was broken. I'm pretty sure I didn't hit it anywhere myself.
As you can see in the pictures, it doesn't look like it was a driver error (or someone else hitting it) since that portion of the tail light is not the first thing that would get hit to be broken. Every other area around the tail light (including the bumper) is scratch free and no sign of accident is visible.

I wanted to ask for some help regarding:
1. Has something similar happened to anyone else?
2. Would I be able to use my warranty to get this replaced? since it doesn't look like it was the result of an accident.
3. How much would it cost to buy the part and if it's too difficult to replace it myself?

Hmm! I didn't know that.
I thought all required it.

My state does require it...
we just replaced ours also- cracked with no visible damage anywhere else, 1000 bucks new, I ordered used off ebay 304.00 but its fixed

Safety Inspection in Virginia every year, and they have to pull two wheels which makes me insane with the Mach-E. I’m sure someone’s going to bend the battery rail one day lifting the car to pull the requisite wheels.

Did you have instructions on how to replace? I had a similar issue (wife met a mailbox and the light took damage), and I've ordered a replacement from EBay. But after taking off the 2 screws, I was unsure if I need to get to the back of the tail light by taking off panels in the trunk, or if there's some other way? Any help would be appreciated!

I replaced the taillight this past weekend and was also unsure how to proceed after removing the two side screws. After a few minutes wiggling and pulling, the light popped out. It's held in via four socket mounts (for lack of a better term) - here's a pic of the left side (the two rightmost holes are where the screws go).

Not sure how the light was damaged in the first place. My best guess is an errant shopping cart, as there was no other damage except directly to the light. Also found the replacement on eBay; the replacement was from a 2021 but it fit and works perfectly on my 2022.

I need to remove mine...
So it's just the 2 screws ?
It looks like from the picture other than those screws that the light then just pulls out of those location holes? I take it there are posts on the back of the light?
Have I got this pretty much right.

Yeah, there are some posts on the back of the light.

Remove the two screws, and then pull while wiggling. It took me awhile but it eventually popped out. There's probably a better way to do this but I didn't come across any other instructions.

Good luck!
