Can't get Google Maps to show up when enabling Android Auto

I don't travel long trips so don't need the maps but I had a road trip today and find that Google Maps is not showing on my display when Android Auto is turned on. I'm getting the ABRP map but even when I have a trip planned and running on my phone I just get the map showing me where I am. Hopefully just missing something simple. Could not find any setting that puts ABRP on the screen when I enable Android Auto. Help for the elderly is tax deductible. Thanks in advance.

Not sure but try looking under phone settings/apps/maps then 'app battery usage'. If 'allow background usage' is off try turning it on.
