Charging and Range

A weird thing is happening. I’m actually getting more miles per Kw when I’m using unbridled around the city instead of whisper. I’m a little heavy off the line and whisper is a little lethargic, but weird that unbridled is better on range. My AWD range just started hitting 273 today (had been showing 211 when I took delivery, but I’m up to about 900 miles on the car now).

Several things are likely contributing to that, so the first question is "has the mi/kwh the tripmeter is reporting changed between driving modes?" I ask that question because the range reported by the car is actually an estimation, and until it has data it intentionally starts at a very conservative estimate. You may have heard it referred to as a "guess-o-meter" (aka GOM), and that is one reason why. I have no idea what weather you saw in march, but one of the major contributors to the GOM being so conservative is cold weather.

So, while it is true that whisper does less inherent regen, it is also true that as you start to press the brake pedal the car uses regen to slow down. As you step harder on the brake you cross the threshold wherein the car then actually tightens the calipers instead of relying on regen to decelerate. So, as long as you are soft enough on the brakes in whisper you will get regen.

As an exercise drive normally in unbridled and note your mi/kwh are reported by the tripmeter. Then, reset the tripmeter (and make sure the mi/kwh number changes to 99.9 when you do) and drive around the same places in whisper, again driving normally. There is of course a bug in the reset button on the tripmeter so that it resets the time and distance but "freezes" the display of the mi/kwh. Hitting reset several times eventually resets it to 99.9, and then it will correctly update the value as you drive.
