Charging problem Starts/Stops

Got my 24 MME Premium back in late August. I had my L2 charger (ChargePoint Home NEMA 14-50) installed by an electrician in early September. 50amp breaker. All worked well until late October. Until then, charging was normal. Since October 30th, the charging at home has continuously stopped/restarted during the charging session. As I don’t drive too much, I had only charged at home. To test the car, I charged at a station at my office (happened to be a ChargePoint as well). While the charge rate was slower than I see at home, the session did not see the stops/restarts that I see at home. I did try throttling the home charger down to 20amps as another troubleshooting step, but that made no difference.

I assumed it was a problem with my home ChargePoint so I worked through the issue with their support, resetting the breaker (again) removing the charger from my app and re-adding to factory reset, verifying wiring connections, etc. They sent me a new charger, which I just installed. Plugged the car in, and this did not fix the issue.

While the charging keeps stopping and restarting, it does eventually finish overnight.

So, any suggestions? Has anyone seen behavior like this? Could this be an issue with the circuit?

Probably the charge port overheating, but you would have to use an OBD2 reader to pull the codes to verify. ??

My guess is that your outlet is going bad. Did you open the outlet to see if everything looks ok? (Be sure to shut off the breaker before opening the outlet!) You will want to remove the outlet cover and then unscrew the screws holding in the outlet. Take a look at the sides/back for any signs of burning, scorching, or other bad stuff. Also, if you smell anything off (e.g., a burned smell or similar), the outlet is likely dying. What brand outlet did the electrician use?

So it's either the car, or the wiring. I would recommend doing a 12V reset on the car to reboot all the modules. Like John said, also check your outlet and breaker wiring. A bad connection somewhere in the wall could cause this sort of issue.

I have a ChargePoint Home flex and mine doesn't do this.

so, went to a fast charger today, charged at ~60kW for nearly 30 minutes with no pauses in charging. Seems to me that indicated the port is fine, and not overheating.

outlet seems to be fine, no evidence of any issues there. Since the charger hade been replaced and the charging port seems fine, I’m going to have the electrician back out to look at the circuit.

Fast charging uses the two bigger pins on the bottom of the connector, that won't heat up the same part of the plug as your home charger does.

You need to try another L2 charger and see if you have the same issue.

I've also had issues with ChargePoint Home Flex. The first one failed after a couple years of light use. The warranty replacement unit had issues right out-of-the-box which I initially blamed on the car. It then failed totally just after the warranty expired. I switched to a different brand and all is well...for now. ?

Finally took it in to the dealer. Of course they didn’t find any problem. Their charge rate was below 6kw. I did tell them it only happens around 8-9kw. When I got the car back, some of the icons were different (public charge, etc.) so it looks like they updated som modules. Nothing about that noted on the s/o though. Ever since I got the car back, the problem hasn’t recurred, so it looks like whatever modules were updated corrected the issue.

I have a ChargePoint Home flex and mine doesn't do this.

MY 23 MME has recently developed the same problem. For several weeks now the car will not complete a home charging session and stops after it has added about 15% or after a few hours on the charger. I have booked the car in to the dealer to see if they can find the issue as I am certain it is not my ZAPPI wall charger as it charges my other EV perfectly. I am interested in your comment about resetting the 12V battery. Is that something I can do from the MME menu?

A further update, the car was checked last week for two days at the local dealer here in Galway. They reported no faults found but did update some software and then charged the car overnight to 100%. I took the car on a 250km round trip yesterday and set it to charge on the preferred charge time of 23.00 to 07.00 to charge from 55% to target charge of 85%. The car failed again to complete the charge stopping at 65% after 2 hours on charge similar to previous occassions.

Back to the dealer again today and we reviewed the latest occurence data and I have now submitted a detailed history with all of the charging data from the FORDPASS app and screen shots so they can assess this with FORD technical support to find a solution to this issue. I will post again when I have better news.

I have found that the max the 2021 mache will take in the first 10 minutes is 32amps. I have an OpenEVSE unit (Juicebox swap out) and have it set to start, when plugged in, to 30 amps and 10 minutes later ramp up to full 40amps. So far it's working.

I mistakenly trusted @Ford Motor Company every time they said an update fixed the charger, and just lowering my Juicebox to 32amps to get by, and now I'm out of warranty.

P.S. my Kia EV9 works at full 40 amps out of the gate on the same EVSE. So it's not the EVSE.

I had similar ChargePoint issues and they sent me a replacement . It just wouldn't stay connected to the internet. New one the same. So now I set charging times on Ford Pass only and it works. Now and then ChargePoint gets all stressed out and feels the need to inform me that my car is NOT charging and MAY be fully charged while Pass is waiting for my charge time to actually arrive. But I just ignore the messages from ChargePoint.
JohnFox's advice to check the plug receptacle (even after using a pro electrician) is important. I did and found they had used a crappy Lectron version known to fy instead of the EV rated one. Made them replace it.
