I know some folks really like their cargo floor in the lower position so that heavier cargo doesn't break the little plastic braces, but for me I like it in the top position so that it will fit my guitar sideways and also for the storage underneath. Normally, I am just carrying my pedalboard and guitar around, but the other day I needed more gear including a heavier amp. So, in a pinch I grabbed a scrap piece of 4x4 post from HomeDepot and started experimenting with different spacers. At the end all I needed was an additional thin piece of cardboard which made the cargo floor rock left and right just a bit, but when compressed (me pressing down) it no longer rocked. I knew I had a winner. Today, I replaced the thin cardboard with some guitar pedal board velcro cut down the middle to make two strips to help hold the 4x4 in place (which it really doesn't need). This also achieved the perfect spacing with a barely noticeable rocking, but when compressed sat perfectly flat. See pics below. And note, my Ford Cargo mat fits fine in the upper position (I just have to lean the back seats forward a bit to install, then click them back into place. No big deal.)
Final solution: part of a 4"x4" (actual measured width for spacer 3.50") + guitar pedal velcro = ~3 9/16"
NOTE: The other side of this post measured less than 3.5", and wouldn't have worked as well).
