Executive stylist John Najjr is credited for naming the mustang by ford. He named it after the P 51 one of his favorite planes. The car could not be sold in Germany for obvious reasons with that name. For Germany the name was changed to the T 5. Ford's marketing didn't think a plane on the side of the car would appeal to young women so they chose a pony. So began the era of the pony car.Yeah the naming history is pretty interesting.
Clearly the primary source of the name was the horse. You can tell from the horses everywhere on the car. That and the other animal named cars from Ford. Also the “pony” references.
The “ground speed” on some Mustangs is more of a tip of the hat to the plane.
