Cue the comments of “See? This is why I for one am happy - nay grateful - that Ford takes its time to get these OTA updates right!” in 3, 2, 1…

Can't I go back less than a month and find a myriad of posts complaining about Ford's OTA updates? Glass houses.

Every vehicle model has issues.

Stellantis just recalled 340,000 diesel Ram trucks for fires.
Tesla just recalled 363,000 cars because of faulty autopilot.
Nissan recalled 405,000 cars because of air bag problems.
GM recalled 22,000 trucks for collapsing fuel tanks and 23,000 SUVs for faulty fuel pumps.
VW recalled 21,000 ID.4s for faulty Battery Control Modules.
Kia recalled 32,000 Tellurides for faulty air bags.
Porsche recalled 25,000 Panameras for electrical short circuits causing fires.
Ford recalled 383,000 vehicles for bad cameras.
Chrysler recalled 67,000 Pacifica PHEVs for transmission failures.
Volvo...27,000
Lincoln...101,000
Mercedes...324,000
Mercedes...124,000 (different problem)
VW...38,000
Subaru...272,000
Completely agree. Every vehicle has problems.
Right now we are having a rash of failures in our Dodge 5500 trucks related to DEF heaters. About $6k a pop.

Our F-550 trucks are having massive oil leaks from the upper oil pan seal. These trucks are only 5-6 years old and the engine has to come out for that repair. $12k per repair.

There's nothing more maddening when the media refers to an OTA update as a "massive recall" when it comes to an EV, particularly Tesla. By that logic, my iPhone is always getting recalls.

I don't get your point. There's a safety issue that requires repair. Tesla refused to fix it voluntarily, so the NHTSA forced the issue. If Tesla had just acted responsibly in the first place, this would have never been a recall, it would have simply been an OTA update.

My Model Y with FSD beta (which btw should never be available to the public) received a software update to address the NHTSA triggered "recall". There was no mechanical repair needed.

why the hostility? Some people....
Not really hostile I’m just providing a reason why those aren’t the same thing and yes I agree some recalls are overblown. I remember getting texts after texts when the HVBJB recall got into the press, like the cars were exploding or something.

That's my point. People are so uneducated in regard to EV's that it's frustrating when the media makes a major issue of something that is simply a OTA update. I constantly get the whole "your car is dangerous" from people because of it.

I'm no fan of Elon, and the FSD beta in my car is so sketchy that I will never drive with it in full control. It's more of a glimpse into where tech is at the moment. But that phantom braking at highway speed... THAT will wake you up!

Nowhere in the term "recall" does it imply that a mechanical repair is required. Software recalls, some with OTA solutions, have been common for more than a decade.

Recalls don't require mechanical repair, it's a process of documenting and retaining a historical record of issues and how the manufacturer addresses them. Some recalls are just documentation issues. Such as correcting something in a manual or label. I had a label applied to a vehicle just to correct the load rating being a few pounds less than listed. It's important to maintain a history of these so people can refer to them when researching vehicles to understand aspects of the vehicle and how they are dealt with. For example, I've looked at the recalls of Hyundai, and even though they have a long warranty that would cover issues, the issues look problematic that appear as excessive cost cutting or low safety margins resulting in major issues in the long run.

Not all recalls are created equal. Software recalls cost little. Hardware failures like HVBJB and GMs battery failures cost billions.

Hyundai software recalls are a pita though. I took my ioniq to the dealer. It took them 3 hours to update preconditioning. I come back to pick up my car and low and behold I still don't have preconditioning because they didn't do it right so I have to bring it back. Oh and the failed preconditioning update broke eco mode. I don't know why Hyundai can't update drive modules ota.

Still it's a small price to pay to be able to DCFC 150+ kw in the cold.

Recap is excellent. Quality control in the auto industry has become a consumer nightmare. I worked on implementation of world wide quality control I SO 9000 back in the 90s for a major steel producer. Car producers jumped on the same quality #1 pitch during this time and found it effective but it hit their bottom line.Quality issues compounded when third party parts suppliers began supplying parts. Today it seems every part manufactured by a third party is on a recall list. Auto producers need to reign in quality defects at point of origin since many parts assembled come from 4th and 5th tier manufacturers. It's a challengung endeavor but costly. It must be more cost effective just doing recalls.

This wasn't even an OTA update from Hyundai. A dealer tech updates the software.
