FPL is teasing their "Charge at Home" program that is supposed to roll out this Summer. Apparently they provide a Level 2 charger and some sort of off peak charging incentives. Otherwise, they say nothing except that it will happen this Summer. Does anyone have any more information?

Yeah I have FPL at home and got an email for this program. Supposed to have free night/weekend charging and installed free for a flat rate. Sounds good but I'm sure the rate will be enough to recoup the equipment and install costs. Fingers crossed for something good!

The website has the costs and terms and conditions for the program, which in my view seems to be very unfriendly in certain ways such as how it’s a TEN year program where “early termination fee is $768.48” and you can not move during those ten years. They do offer a buyout option the equipment after five years.

Conspiculosly absent from the FP&L FAQ page is information about the off-peak rate. All they say is that the on-peak rate with their equipment will be a punishing $0.2287/kWh rate. This is odd for me because I currently only pay them $0.12 to $0.15 per kWh for my home.

Yes, the picture sure looks like a FP&L-branded JuiceBox. Sounds like they will insist on using their charger, which is probably JuiceBox hardware with customized firmware.

Perhaps I'm missing something, but unless the off-peak rate is really low, I'm planning on keeping the JuiceBox that I also already own.

Well, my interpretation is for the $38 monthly cost we’ll get unlimited off-peak charging, but you bring up a good point; we are also averaging about $0.12 per kwh at home when you factor in all the fees, charges, etc. in our monthly bill now without a L2 charger.

My break-even back of the envelope calculation of about 317 kwh using my $0.12 average cost and the $38 flat monthly cost would translate to just under five full charges for our standard battery Mach-e if we stuck to only charging during off-peak hours. Definitely would allow me to use the Mach-e for my daily work commute which is about 40 miles round-trip. Would be a no-brainer for us.

$31/month for unlimited off peak and weekends if you already have the 240v circuit, $38 if they have to put one in from scratch.

Might make sense.
It all depends on much you drive each month.
(and how long you plan to live at your place!)

I drive 15,000 a year, so 1,250 a month on average.
That should be about 420-450kWh, so at $0.12/kWh I would save about $50-$55 a month.
Then considering you pay $31 for the program (if you already have an existing 240V), you'll end up saving $19 to $24 a month.
That would take about 3 years to cover the early termination fee.

If you don't have a 240V yet, and want L2 charging, probably makes even more sense, because you'd end up spending money to get that installed anyway.

I'm following this and will see when folks get it installed.
I just ordered my Mach E this week (before the order book closed). I don't have any outlet or L2 charger yet.

What I'm still not 100% sure of is "unlimited off-peak" - does that mean that you can charge for the flat rate of $38/month during off peak OR is it no cap but during off peak.

My FPL bill is just the flat residential rate vs peak/off-peak - I assume that with the FPL program they are going to get usage reports from the charger and credit you back for that usage???

It will be interesting to see once people actually have it installed

Just got an outrageous quote for running a new 50amp 50 ft conduit etc for 14-50 in exterior location . Or I think it was high, was $1900.. I was thinking it should be around 1000$.
FPL would be a no brainer but I don't have a garage..

Under the FPL program you will be able to charge as much as you want for the flat rate of $38 or $32 depending on whether you need the outlet install. If you need to charge during Peak periods then they will charge you double normal rate but you still be able to charge.

I think the charger can be outside, but I’m not sure
