I should be easy for audio processing to compare what it is playing with what it is hearing and only react to the differences. Basic same tech as noise canceling headphones. Subtract the microphone signal from the outgoing audio by shifting it 180 degrees out of phase and add them together. The difference is the people in the car.

I NEED it to work because I need to keep my eyes on the road and I cant even figure out how to turn on the radio when I am driving. It was a promised feature so they better get it to work great.
My noise cancelling headphones cost hundreds of dollars and then can not fully cancel out speech from the surrounding environment.

"It’s a popular misconception that noise-cancelling headphones can block out any sound around you. People purchase them in the hopes of dimming the din of kids at play, loud-talking officemates, the barking dog next door, and airplane engines. The trouble is, active noise cancellation is really effective on only one of those things. (Spoiler: It’s the airplane engine.) The reason has to do with the physics of sound and how noise-cancelling headphones work.

ANC is better suited for reducing low, sustained sounds like those of motors and airplane engines, and it’s why such headphones can’t filter out screaming kids."

Not the case for sync 3. With AA or car play running, the internal nav and voice commands were disabled and the button would activate Google assistant or siri
Wrong regarding CarPlay at least. Both Siri and Sync 3 Nav voice commands available from steering wheel through long and short press.

I wanted it to respond to "Computer", but realized that it would false trigger more. "Car Computer" or "Hello Computer" might be better. I do not tend to name cars, but I could go with "Okay Siobhan", or "Hello Naimh", or some other Celtic name that North Americans do not know how to pronounce.

Hmm maybe different based on model then. My 2017 F150 definitely disabled it when AA was running

I confirmed the tip from JohhnyForensic and Macchiaz-o that with my MME Sync4 there is indeed a short quick push of the Voice Commend Button for Ford and a longer push for Apple Car Play or Android Auto. The ready to listen tones are different with a lower pitch beep for Ford and higher pitch beep for Phone Apps.

I appreciate your point, and the article. Noise Cancelling Headphones wasn't the best example for me to site but I though more of the audience would be familiar with that technology.

The broader term is Audio Signal Processing or ASP and can be provided by off the shelf processors employed in Home Theater receivers to decode all the various types of surround sound and simulate the sound of a Hall, Stadium, etc. I worked for 7 years at an audio conferencing company where one of our major innovations was employing ASP for Echo Cancelling for multiple seats around a conference table for video conferencing.

High cost for the hardware would not be may not be an issue as ASP is already employed in the Mach E for Auto Volume Control, likely the Tone Controls, Voice Recognition. If their is left over capacity, or if other features can be streamlined to run more efficiently, Ford could likely send the firmware update to cancel audio system sound out of the voice recognition subroutine.

Is there an option to create your own Attention Word? In the dummy menus, I only saw lame preselected choices like "Hey Ford" and "OK Ford". Why no "Hey Pony" or the like. If you can choose your own phrase, I would like mine to respond to "Hey Kit", even though the Night Rider 2000 car was a Camaro. "Hey Pony" not bad. How often does the word Pony come up in conversation other than if you ask a 5 year old what they want for their birthday?

In my 2018 Escape, when I connected my iPhone, it took over everything except the radio. Navigation? iPhone. Voice commands? iPhone.

That’s exactly the way Sync has always worked since Sync 2. Nothing new there.
Unless you never had Sync 2 or Sync 3, in which case, everything is new.

I never used CarPlay with Sync 3. I played with it for about 5 minutes and decided that it was not one of Apple's better efforts (and I'm a diehard Apple fanboy).

I've had vehicles with Sync 2, Sync 3, and now Sync 4. With Sync 2 (MFT), Ford released a special USB hub that you had to have the dealer add fo iPhone support. Along with that you got "EyesOn" support. "EyesOn" was the long press of the talk button on the steering wheel which brought up Siri. Short press always allowed you to use Sync voice commands. This continued with Sync 3. Sync 3 also brought CarPlay. When you used CarPlay, you lost access to the Sync Voice command when CarPlay was being used. If you didn't use CarPlay, a short press allowed access to Sync Voice Commands. A long Press was "EyesOn" which brought up Siri. The same functionality continues in Sync 4.
After I remembered that the "wake" word for my car is "Hey Ford", I haven't had a problem using the voice commands "Hey Ford, Tune Alt Nation" or "Hey Ford Destination 1800 Market Street Philadelphia".

Sadly, nope. I want the attention word to be "Hey Mustang". Maybe someday.
My real dream would be if Ford would integrate the HomeLink garage door opener into Sync. Can you imagine saying "Open the Pod bay doors Hal"? :D

FordPass's answer: "I'm sorry @Jimrpa, but I can't do that. I can't allow you to jeopardize the safety of the vehicle but allowing you to drive it."

I mean, tell me if I'm wrong here but this doesn't seem like a big deal to me. Just turn off the phrase recognition, and use the button that's on the steering wheel.

Still extremely accessible but doesn't trigger randomly. If I can push a button to turn on cruise control I can certainly push a button to wake up voice commands ?‍♂
Activating sync is not the issues. Getting to work it. For example sync does not like any commends that have to do with adjusting the fan speed. She just does not recognize them and says "you can say things like ""I am cold"" "
