Highway 93 between Lake Louise and Jasper in Alberta is perhaps the most beautiful road in the world. There is no electricity on it, and no DCFC in Lake Louise, so it's potentially a 312km journey from Canmore's DCFCs to Jasper, which is fine for the ER models in the summer, but I was worried about winter. I decided to give it a test drive, yesterday. Even though the temperature was not extremely cold (-5°C) I felt it would be a useful test on a beautiful day.

We left Canmore with 2 people and 100%, from a heated garage but without preconditioning, staying at the National Park speed limit of 90km/h. We were at 78% SOC at Lake Louise. There is a 9kW L2 charger at Lake Louise that I wanted to try, so we had a good lunch and did some shopping for outdoor gear for an hour and a half, charging to 93%.

From Lake Louise we drove 43.5 km up to Bow Summit. There was a lot of packed snow, and almost no-one was going 90 km/h, most were at about 75km/h, one person even going 45 km/h on the iciest section, with limited opportunity to pass. We probably averaged about 75 km/h. On the way up we used 30kWh/100km, but the way back downhill was mostly free, so the average over 87km round trip was 20 kWh/100km. We might only need 50% of our capacity to do the entire 232km chargerless section from Lake Louise to Jasper, if we drive at 75km/h because of the conditions and it's only -5C.

We kept the cabin temp at 18-18.5C, with coats on and blankets over our legs.

The second photo shows 1hour 39minutes from Lake Louise to Bow Summit and back, but that includes the time for an espresso and some photos at Bow Summit / Peyto Lake parking lot.

The Micheline X-Ice tires were great.

Great picture of your MME in the snow!

That is interesting. It goes to show how much the resistance heating reduces range. I was surprised a relatively small amount went to keeping the battery warm.

I think the biggest increase in range was due to the slow speed, not the 18.5C cabin temperature. But, the 18.5C cabin temperature was not uncomfortable with the coats and a blanket.

My traveling companion went to Amazon and purchased an 12V (cigarette outlet) throw blanket and loves it!

I think we used 25kWh/100km (20kWh being 22% of 91kWh) driving the 81 km from Canmore to Lake Louise at 92km/h and cabin temperature at 18.5C. So, the lower consumption rate of 20kWh/100km after Lake Louise surely was mostly due to the lower speed.

I am looking at driving from SoCal to abbotsford for AHL hockey. Do I need to be concerned. I looked at the drive and found EA Canada out of Vancouver and then you go north and then south to get there. Are there other fast chargers besides EA Canada in that area??

A lot of the DCFC chargers are on the Flo network at 50kW. Check PlugShare. You don’t need to be concerned if you are happy at 50kW.

Im ok with 50kW charging speed I mostly time my stops coincide with my meal breaks and I enjoy a good meal. Sometimes I’m not very hungry so I enjoy a leisurely coffee break. I love coffee.

But that means I have to research my charging stops in advance because some stops don’t have good restaurants nearby.

Only a Canadian thinks -5C is not that cold ?. I had a corporate retreat in Canmore five years ago and absolutely loved it…till I saw bear mace sold with bubble gum. Never made it onto Lake Louise, though.

I echo your praise of the Michelin X-Ice. I have them installed on my car too and they handle like a dream.
