It feels to me that there were a set of companies that were reluctantly going along for the ride, with no real conviction that EVs are the future of automobiles. They are showing that lack of conviction now. I predict that they will be left behind.
That is incorrect. Honda isn't investing billions to be left behind. Ford is taking a $19 billion charge off against their EV program. It is the government regulations driving the industry out of business. The whole American EV market will get left behind when China continues to make new partnerships with Canada and South America for new entry ways

I have a pretty big family and we all get together a few times annually. Holidays and the official family reunion.

I'm the only one, so far, to be an EV'r.
Admittedly I am still identified as "normal" and I suppose that is because I still tow my RV's with an ICE truck, and I still have my beloved Porsche with a flat6. 😁

But I can assure you that the US government hasn't ever done anything pro or against EV ownership that has been the deciding factor for any of my family members. At least nothing that I have ever heard or witnessed myself.

EV's just aren't as appealing to Americans as we might want them to be. That hardly bothers or surprises me. Afterall, I've been one for near 70 years. We are some of the most non-conforming folks on the planet. Good and bad.
Besides, I as 1 EV enthusiasts, don't really desire the government to play much of a role in our consumer preferences.

There’s no doubt that gov reg is intentionally killing EVs, and doing a damn good job at it. However, companies’ response is up to them. Contrast the cowardice you see from Honda with the bravery of Rivian. When you fate is in the balance, you muscle through obstacles and find ways to over come them. When it’s not, you’d be happy to sacrifice billions and sit your ass comfortably home. Honda won’t be getting my biz, now or anytime in the future.

By buying ice, Americans are conforming. Taking the boring, uninteresting, unadventurous route.

This is disappointing as the Acura RSX was on my list of future vehicles.

Honda Cancels All Three EVs That It Planned to Build in the U.S.
Chhina will take over the EV market in the US.
The price advantage isn’t accidental or temporary. The cost advantage Chinese automakers hold in EVs is the product of state subsidies, vertical integration across the battery supply chain, and a domestic manufacturing base generating extraordinary scale — factors that tariffs can delay but cannot eliminate.
Chinese firms also move dramatically faster. Chinese EV models reach the market two to three years faster than non-Chinese brands, with Chinese EV firms typically taking 20 months to develop a new car, compared with 40 months for legacy competitors.
Detroit’s ā€œBig Threeā€ have collectively fallen from a global market share of 21.4% in 2019 to an estimated 15.7% in 2025, while BYD and Geely have grown from less than 3% to an estimated 11.1% of the global market.

Chinese automakers are not waiting idly. China’s share of the Mexican EV market grew from 24% in 2023 to 80% in 2024 and 89% in 2025, with BYD the market leader. They are essentially surrounding the US market. Chinese companies are also exploring building factories in Mexico and other countries with trade agreements that could bypass tariff barriers.
Meanwhile, US firms are quietly exploring ties with Chinese manufacturers. Ford and China’s Geely are in active discussions about a potential partnership, reflecting just how wide the technology gap has become.

Yeah, it’s pretty easy to blame tariffs and ending of government incentives as scapegoats for these decisions.

But the trendlines for EV sales and (lack of) profits started waaaaay before 2025.

Expect to see more cancelled products…….and I actually think this is a GOOD thing near term for the EV market.

Way too many EV models flooded the market at the same time. In 2025 there were 73 different models Fromm major automakers being sold in the US.

The current demand and market simply isn’t big enough for that many models.

Less is more in this case and it means the fewer models that remain may have a better shot at profitability.

Because right now? It took the Model Y nearly half of total EV sales to be profitable. That left the other 72 competitors fighting over the scraps.
