In other words:
  1. Is that rate guaranteed in perpetuity?
  2. Will your electricity cost ever be 0?
  3. What is your daytime rate when you're running your AC for hours on end?
Like EVs, solar is an excellent solution if you have the infrastructure to accommodate it.

For example, I'm not going to cut down all the mature trees overhanging my house to install solar panels when that shade helps us out tremendously in the summer (plus it would be an abomination to remove healthy 100+ year old trees for no good reason.)

Glad you're in a circumstance that solar works for you. Some of us "make do" by charging overnight at the lowest rate we can get and feel like we're doing our best to help reduce our carbon footprint through a series of tradeoffs.

Oh, absolutely rooftop solar is not always the right/best answer. The world is far too complex a place for silver bullets. I too have a huge 50 year old oak tree that shades the back of our house in the afternoon, and in fact my ridge line runs north/south so my panels face east and don't generate as much power as they would if facing south with no shade. Nonetheless, it works out well enough for my needs.

Anyway, there is also a movement for "community solar" that is starting to take hold for those for whom solar isn't a good option. The idea is that large arrays are situated on land not suitable for other uses such as landfills, under power lines, "green spaces", or even on raised platforms over grazing land. The output of those panels are paid for by small communities which then share the benefit of the power. Further "shared" opportunities are parking lots - they're a perfect place for overhead panels that also provide shade for cars, reducing the need to blast a car's AC on full for 10 minutes when first getting in.

In Maine, we have clusters of solar panels popping up into the otherwise unusable space in freeway exit cloverleafs and similar areas. I hope more parking lots (and DC fast charging stops) have solar awnings for shade and power supplementation.

Stats are in for 65,466 miles & 27mths.

Total kWh bought 22,067 for £5,784.25

74.96% 16,542 Kwh at home cost £2,607.10
25.04% 5,526.48kWh on DCfC for £3,141.15

So 25.04% on DCFC cost 54.65% of total

Av £0.16/kWh home and £0.57/kWh DCFC

If ICE @ 48mpg & £1.50/litre would cost £9274.35 in petrol.

Therefore, fuel saving using EV (MME RWD ER) = £3,526.10 which is 38.02%.

Added to which savings are those on income tax company BIK (car tax) and Corporarion Tax breaks = mucho savings ?

E&OE

You could substitute fuel & electricity unit prices for your part of the world to work out a comparison relative to local conditions.
