How safe is the tracker tool?

I'm wondering, how safe it is to use the tracker tool? I mean a VIN is a personal number which shouldn't be public right? Where do this data go?
I also saw so many people post their order numbers and so on. So, someone could write ford with your VIN and order number and ask things or even worse.
My question is. Can I use the tracker without any doubts? Or do I act at my own risk?

You're too paranoid! VINs are public anyway - if you go to a dealer site, any car they have on the lot has a VIN displayed on the website.

But if it really matters to you, just track your order by logging into the Ford site. In reality that's not giving you much more info than the tracker. When my car shipped the tracker and Ford site changed within hours of each other.

You could ask the author

Hi guys,

I coded this tracker which pulls up build specs, photos, production status, ship/transit info, window sticker, etc. on your Mach-E :

Mach-E Order Tracker Tool [Enter VIN]

If you have your VIN, it will give you your options and more informations like status and dates.

so we know from the author that it's all client side script (which I've always assumed is part of why the site admin here was able to integrate it quickly to this site) and you can read it to see that the tracker doesn't do anything insidious, although it's a completely valid question to ask.

that said, it disturbs me a little more that Ford has this information available from a public VIN with an open, unauthenticated API, because as pointed out, VINs are public on dealer sites. It's how I found my VIN (said at least twice on other posts here) - went through every VIN on my dealer site until I found the one with my last name. (This was before the other site a member made that lets you start with order number [but does require signing in to Ford's site so not unauthenticated] existed.)

yet, here we are. ?‍♂

The VINs are also all listed by dealer at autotrader.com, where Ford publishes both FCTP and special ordered Mach-E (including some FE now listing) as they near arrival. Ford acts like this is normal, but I don't see other manufacturers doing this, many only post cars -that are actually for sale- such as extra Mach-E orders beyond the FCTP car, or a canceled order. (not including slow take downs common to many dealers across brand, once a vehicle is sold.). A very small few of the listed Mach-E are actually available for sale, or recently sold outside of the reservation/order system.

When you enter a VIN into the tracker, you do see the customer last name, if it is a customer order. That field is probably not otherwise publicly available.

If you go to palsapp and search by freight number it lists bunch of VINs delivered to the ramp. You can enter each VIN into the Ford publicly available vin status tracker and you can see customer name there too . So it’s kind of out there even without the cobrajet tracker

Sorry the Ford tracker does not show the last name I thought it did . I stand corrected but you can get bunch of VINs from palsapp freight deliver list.

I've used it to take ownership of several brand new MMEs, I've sold them back to dealerships for a huge markup. Mine should be free by the time it gets here, hope this helps.
