I broke down and paid a markup.

I ordered a RWD CA Route 1 on 11/28. I ended up upgrading that order to AWD in Feb (which I’m starting to think reset my spot in line). I absolutely hate the dealership this order was placed with, and I later decided that I’d probably abandon this order. I placed a second order for the same car with a better dealership before the order banks closed. The new dealership has been really great so far.

I broke when I watched the July build dates start filling up, knowing that I probably wouldn’t even want my first order. My family is on one car right now. We put a Escape PHEV on order (this was going to be our second car after the MachE), but we’ve had that build date move 10 times already. It’s currently more than a month out, and we are in desperate need of a second car now.

My first plan was to find a Select w/ Tech (I really want the memory seats & cameras), and I’d just trade it in when my car arrived. I’d just eat the markup. I found an option for one at a $5k markup, but the delivery was June 28-July 4. This wasn’t ideal, and it was the only option within 250miles and a markup under 10k.

I stumbled across a ER RWD Premium 100 miles away that was available now, with my ideal color. They had a $20k markup. I told them I couldn’t stomach that, but I’d give them $7.5k. They called back later offering a $10k markup. My wife told me to just get this over with and do it, so I did. It wasn’t until I showed up that they told me about the $1k paint protection. I started to raise a fuss, but my wife again told me to just take it. So I ended up paying a $11k markup.

I don’t think I have any regrets with what happened today. My only regret is that I didn’t do this sooner. The car is incredible, and I’m thrilled to abandon both of my orders. I’m not proud of how much I spent, but I am so happy to have all this stress behind me.

I didn’t know I could fall in love with this car more than I already was. It has checked off even more boxes than I expected. This absolutely was the right car for me. I seriously considered all of the competition, and I disliked all of them for one reason or another. I’m glad I didn’t settle. I glanced down at the steering wheel on my way home, and the pony brought a huge smile to my face.

You know, I tip my hat off to you. I get the whole "not wanting to deal with the hassle" thing. Certain people have certain things break their way, certain people don't. Having it all behind you, having the car you wanted, in your possession, is what matters. Congratulations!

Thanks!

I should clarify that I posted this because there is a stigma against paying the markup, and I wanted to share an alternate point of view. I totally get the stigma, and I had it for awhile. If you can wait, just wait. However, if you’re stressing about the wait, and you have the means to pay the markup, maybe consider it. That’s mostly what I wanted to share.

Yes. At the end of the day, having the car is all that matters. Soon that tax credit will be a thing of the past, and guess what? Unlikely that the price of the car as new will dip. Soon, there will be no or little additional incentive to buy an EV from any maker that you would want to get one from. Interest rates will climb as well. I ate a small markup for buying off of lot, but if I had ordered and waited, CCFR would have been slashed in half at time of getting the car, and it looks like I would have had to have waited a year, I would have gotten my car right about now, instead of enjoying my car for a year and getting comfortable with it.

Congrats, and don't look back. I paid a markup too, but I wasn't buying an MME, but rather a Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ltd. I was months into waiting on my MME order, looking at yet many more months of waiting. I feel good about both, because my trade-in markup offset the dealer markup and the Ioniq 5 is very similar in all the ways that a BEV appeals to me. I continue to wait for my MME order and will decide what to do with it, assuming the promises to honor the price protection and no-ADM.

and, for those who wait... The Federal tax credit is real and will apply to MME purchased in US the rest of 2022 and all of 2023, although dropping in amount. For example, if Ford hits its 200,000 cap of US EV sales in 2022 Q3 (July-Sep), as some predict, the full $7500 will apply to US purchases made in 2022 second half, July -December. 1 Jan 2023 it would drop to $3750 for 2 quarters, and 1 July 2023 it would drop by half again ($1875) until 31 Dec 2023. Thereafter it would be zero.

There's no shame in paying markup. People who buy Teslas pay markup. The only difference is that ALL Tesla buyers pay markup. But the terminology is different, they call it MSRP.

I did as well. I have a GT on order and the build date was in June and came across the same exact model and color. I flew up to San Francisco and drove it home to Southern California. I paid 5k over sticker. I’m enjoying the car everyday. Figure I would make up the difference from paying 6.00 dollars for a gallon of gas.

Why did you settle for rwd if you wanted AWD so bad that you ordered it twice?

I often find that in todays market, where I spend most of my time at work, and have reached some semblance of financial stability…. Avoiding a hassle… has value. Saving a portion of what little free time I have… has a value. Each person sets their own value on such precious commodities.

Wife didn’t know she wanted a MME until we were on our way to a BMW dealership to look at an X3 and saw an MME at a neighboring dealer. Figured we would look at it and cross it off the list, but wife fell in love with it. This was a month ago, so orders were closed. Not a lot of options and I called 20 dealers checking on markup; every single dealer had one varying from $5k-$20k. I paid a $7.5k markup, basically the tax credit, to get the exact model in the exact color we would have ordered, if it were a possibility. We also got $3k more for our current vehicle than I thought we would, and I got 2.3% financing, so both helped me swallow that ADM.

Something to be said for getting something now versus an indefinite wait… I mean the wasted time spent looking and watching and anticipating this has some value…. Can you tell I am one nudge away from doing the same? My issue, I have a hard time paying over for a car today, when my dealer will still received my ordered car later to sell? Win win for them, so I need just a little win in this deal too….

Good question. The short answer is: I should not have been buying an AWD.

I originally ordered a RWD because I live in Southern California and I have no need for an AWD. I wanted range more than anything. I then spent months obsessing over the order. I kept watching and rewatching reviews. Most reviewers seem to live in cold climates, and I started getting convinced that AWD made sense based on their recommendations. I ultimately justified it when the 2022 numbers came out and I noticed there was only a two mile difference on the CA RT1. I thought the extra HP would be nice.

Those were dumb reasons to get it. RWD was the smarter buy for my use case.
