Increase range on GT for long trips

The base GT has the same EPA range as the Premium 4X. I don’t know how that’s possible.

How long of a trip? How often will you make the trip?

Do you really want to spend hundreds of dollars to save a few minutes charging? And ride uncomfortably (no air) for a few extra miles of range?

And driving slowly may get you farther between charges, but it also takes you longer to get there.

Basically, what are your goals? Saving time, money, or something else?

It is a big math problem. If you know how far you’re going, you could calculate the rough number of charging stops, time charging, and total travel time at different speeds.

I don’t think you’ll look at the math and want to end up buying wheels/tires, drive slow and no a/c, but maybe you are trying to shave a few minutes off the trip.

It’s only about a 10% difference.

And if you’re driving and charging from 20% to 80%, it’s really only a few miles.

You can get close to CR1 #s. 3.1/3.2 miles per kwh is what I see on the highway going low 70s in warm weather.

Just charged to 100% for a trip yesterday and the GOM read 290mi. Averaged 3.1 over 155 miles going 70-75mph (about 135 miles of which was highway), >2000ft elevation gain.

For me, I also bought them for winter wheels (also I even swapped them for my stock GT flower wheels which were never going on the car again).

It's nothing but a big math problem. While there are other variables, such as initiating the charge, navigating to the charger off the route, what SOC does one charge to before leaving, etc, this chart is useful for visualizing the time cost of driving faster vs driving more efficient.

For example, the chart below is based on a 91 kWh battery at an average (not peak) charge speed of 65 kWh for a 400 mile trip. If driving at 65 mph gives an average efficiency of 2.5 mi/kWh the entire trip, driving plus charge time, takes 7hr 42min with 1hr 33min spent charging.

If one drives at 75mph and the efficiency drips to 2.2 mi/kWh, that same trip takes 7hr 19min with 1hr 59 min of that being time spent charging.

So driving 75 mph will get you to your destination roughly 20 minutes earlier - even though it's close to an extra 30 minutes of charging.

Unless you're worrying about range to the next DCFC charger or your destination, there really is no need to drop your speed on a long road trip.

im not sure if you can install CR1 rims on GT since GT has larger calipers. Also, GT is heavier.

The CR1 wheels fit a GT fine. They physically fit a GTPE, but the clearance is nil.

A/C uses almost no power, as it's a very efficient electric motor. Heating is another story. {Jonathan}

Ford derated the 4x ER premium’s EPA range estimate after the initial testing. It wasn’t by a huge amount as I recall, but that's how it came up with exactly 270 miles. Things have changed a bit since 2021.

Depends on the speed you were going. If you were going 40mph, you won't use much power for the motor, so the A/C will use a higher percentage. At highway speeds for me, I've never seen the A/C use go much above 5%.

Tire pressure has a significant impact on range. Make sure the GT tires are at full recommended pressure.

I agree with Steve and CR1 wheels/tires will add about 10% to the range. I don't think the bigger motor matters much, but I am not going to disagree with Lee. He is a smart cookie. Speaking of cookies, chocolate chip is my favorite.
