Please dont pick up your phone, my young kids are out on bikes in the neighborhood, dont need you running them over. Thank you.

When I have stuff to do I actually pull over, wild concept.
My point exactly. Having the phone keypad is not typing, and it is far safer than picking up the phone, which is what I have to do now and it is distracting

Pressing a giant “1” on a screen phone keypad is no less problematic than pressing the heat button up 4 times to warm up the cabin.

Correct, I am just saying dont pick up the phone.

We really just need much higher penalties/jail time for any incident involving distracted driving. 2 kids have been hit while on bikes in my area in the last 6 months, you pressing 1 is not more important than their right to life.

A agree. I love bike riding but always go where there are no cars because so many drivers aren’t watching the road. My only point is I think having a giant number keypad is safer. I have number keypad buttons in my old volvo.

Sigh… so to all the finger waggers here about avoiding distraction:

Ford and all other car manufacturers allow A LOT of interaction with controls while driving. HVAC, radio, etc.

It’s where they draw the line that is the issue. I think reasonable people would agree that hunting and pecking to spell out words on a keyboard takes your eyes off the road for way too long. But being able to access the number pad during an active phone call to tap 1 or 2 etc. is not nearly the same thing, and really no more distracting than the interaction that is already allowed. I wish they would change this.

I’m curious if this line is set by a regulator such as the NHTSA, because it seems pretty standard across all manufacturers.

Yes per NHTSA, no on-screen keyboards or typing allowed.
