That‘s an interesting idea. Put a button on the passenger door (out of the driver’s reach) that enables keyboard entry for a few minutes.

Interesting point... I've noticed that the built-in nav behaves differently when a front passenger is detected. Some of the screens that are normally locked out will show a button to unlock. It says something like "I am the passenger." After you tap that it allows more controls to be used.

Maybe the keyboard does work in that context? I haven't checked that, specifically.

Yes, if there's weight in the passenger seat then passenger modes are available. Otherwise not.

Have you tried alternatives, such as using Android Auto, then the voice assistant available there? Or Apple CarPlay and Siri? I’m not sure that it’s really wise to be taking your attention away from the driving environment for the amount of time necessary to complete a task as complex as entering destinations into the navigation system (I’m using the term “complex” in the sense of the degree of operator engagement required).

I've owned 3 cars with nav, each disables the system to some degree while the device is in motion.

I'd be happy if cellphones did the same.

there are a million little things that you can't do while driving on Sync and also on carplay. more than any other systrem I have used in the past 10 years including Lincolns, which used an older version of sync.
