I kind of like this mod and would like more light in the trunk. Just a thought, how about using a light triggered relay to just "piggyback" the standard light? Something like this;

The sensor could be put close to the standard light itself.

Assuming of course it has the option to turn "on" when light is sensed (kind of the opposite of a normal photosensor relay operation).

This might work, but it could be challenging to get it to only come on with the light is on, vs it’s daylight. Also I’d be concerned with current consumption of the sensor circuit.
