Mauna Loa Erupts

The world's largest volcano and the second most massive mountain erupted at 11:30 pm HST Sunday night. Mauna Loa (Hawaiian for Long Mountain) is about 30 miles as the ʻalalā flies southeast of where my wife, cats, and mach-e live. The eruption is, as of this morning, primarily from fissures along the northeast rift zone. Mauna Loa is one of two active volcanos on Hawaii island, Kilauea being the other. Both active volcanos are currently erupting. Mauna Loa last erupted in 1984 and was overdue by several years based on the mean time between eruptions. The other volcanos are Kohala (extinct), Maunakea (dormant), and Hualalai (dormant). We have a good view of the night sky and the effects the breakout has on it. Pictures are from this morning between 5:30 am HST and just before 6 am HST.

Very neat shots.

We visited the Big Island back in April 2011, spending about 10 days. Those 10 days were when Kilauea decide to stop flowing. Nothing. Nada. Left, and a week later it was in the news.

A couple of pictures from the owners of a local dive shop. These were taken from the Maunakea Visitors Center last night. The Visitors center is at 9,000 ft MSL and is directly across the saddle (the area on the island between Maunakea and Mauna Loa) from the Mauna Loa access road.
