What makes the CA Route 1 so much more efficient or is it more personal driving habits?
For the older CA R1 versions it starts off with being RWD only (no front motor weight/drivetrain drag) and having smaller 18" aerodynamic wheels. Then add in personal driving habits and it can have very long range.

  • Only one motor instead of two, saving weight
  • Aggressive reduction in extra parts (e.g. no automated liftgate to save the weight of the mechanism)
  • Flat, aerodynamic wheels
Combining the higher efficiency with the larger 88kWh battery pack gives it 300+ miles of EPA range. In the summer, it's common for my CA1 to show a range of 360 miles or more.

The downhill trips are always entertaining. Recent Tahoe trip with approximate 7000 ft elevation gain:

Uphill: ~100 miles, 38.5 kWh, 2.6 mi/kWh
Downhill: ~100 miles, 10.6 kWh, 9.5 mi/kWh
Combined efficiency of ~ 4 mi/kWh

At one point, I think my SOC visibly gained around 5% charge over the course of driving for 30 min in the steeper sections.

My peak record was 31 miles/kWh, when I drove down along CA-74 from Cariso Campground down to the Lake Elsinore :)

What’s weird is mine peaked en route at 31.1 mi/kWh and the previous screenshot in this chain was the same. I wonder if that’s a random software/display cap?
