This is the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
After reading all the replies (thank you one and all) I was converted. I would no longer be a slave to the fob.
This morning, I headed out to the garage to drive into town. Walk up to the driver's door, push the button and it opens just like it should.
Sit down, put on my seat belt, step and hold the brake and push the go button, nothing happens. step and hold the brake again and punch the go button, nothing.
Well, there was something, on the big screen was a prompt saying where's the key? (I'm paraphrasing) Please enter secret start code.
I get out of the car, go into the house and retrieve the fob, get in, start up the car and drive away.
With apologies to all you PAAK folks, I will always carry my fob.

I haven't touched my fob in about a year. I often approach my car faster than the Mach-e registers the presence of my PAAK, and have to wait a few seconds before the door will open, but I've never once had the issue of the door opening but my car not starting... Very odd behavior!

I stopped carrying my FOB about a month ago and have had to use the start password a few times. It's weird that a couple of times it opened the door with Paak but then wouldn't start.

I have noticed that it seems less likely to work when I have both my personal and work phone on me.

It's annoying but as long as I can get in the car and start it with the door code and password I prefer that inconvenience to carrying the fob.

Very jealous, PAAK isn't enabled here in the UK, for ‘Insurance reasons’ apparently

My 23 had to spend time at the dealer under warranty for a bunch of software fixing. Including the walk up welcome and paak. It is now working but I carry the fob anyway.

I have a '23 GTPE. After hearing the stories on this forum, I started keeping the fob in the car wrapped in aluminum foil. In my tests that seems to work as a Faraday bag. It is not uncommon for the car not to recognize PAAK, but EVERY time I've had an issue I remote start the climate and then it recognizes PAAK. Since keeping the fob in the car I've not used it. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I use the PAAK solidly for last two years on two cars. Important though to have your door code working & the car start passcode, i.e. Ford/Lincoln apps down one day in 2025 due to Amazon WW server network error.
if the car does requires a passcode after pressing the start button, not picked up iPhone is present inside, I just open the Ford app on iPhone and "unlock" the car which occurs within milliseconds, then no passcode needed. Personal Profile is also correctly set (If I bugger up the Wife's...I'm dead...).
Don't leave keys/FOBs in car, car owner will regret, especially when they leave their cars parked on driveway, as per my Canadian insurance company service agent chat one day.

Ok. If you feel uncomfortable not having a fob, then don’t use paak. The rest of us wont mind in the slightest. Make sure you have the door code memorized though, factory or personal, as fob batteries die too.

The few times this has happened to me I exited the car, closed the door and waited for the lights to go out. Then opened the app and climbed back into the car and it worked.

I used PAAK until the second time the Android OS update error caused PAAK not to work. The car HAS to be reliable when I'm responsible for precious cargo, i.e. my granddaughter. I can't place her at risk that some algorithm error will strand us. I do have the external door entry code and car start code set, so I have those backups.

I use PAAK and still carry the FOB just in case phone battery dies or phone gets lost. Finally set the door and run pass codes a few weeks ago so occasionally using them to drive leaving both the phone and key at home just so I know I have that third option as a last resort.

My 2c is to set them, and test them a few times, leaving the phone and fob at home and taking a drive down the road and confirming it all works. Because someday you'll need it and really wish you had gotten it to work earlier.

Once i feel confident to remember the pass codes well enough to rely on them, i'll stop carrying the FOB.

Also: if you have a smart watch, install the app. I went to the store shortly after I got the car and was relying on PAAK and hadn't taken the fob with me. I left the phone in the car, and the car locked automatically after being turned off for 30 minutes.

Didn't know my door code yet.

SHIT

Luckily I had the ford app on the watch and was able to unlock the car with it.

I have also had it let me in the car and then tell me I don’t have a key. Then typically works when I unlock phone, but have also had to open app.

3 years, only PaaK. There have been some hiccups but never stranded. That’s what the backup codes are for. FOBs are for the dealer / tire shop / etc.

I have on a regular basis had this issue, but I know the cause of the issue, is because I have the sharing of my driving data turned off.
