I must have missed this when it was first announced but the off peak discount from PSEG has gone up substantially since June, and if I'm not mistaken essentially cuts the cost of electricity by almost 50% (at least judging from my bills). Here is the link. They say:
  • Once enrolled in the program, customers may receive an Off-Peak Charging credit for charging during off-peak periods to help reduce costs.
    • Off-peak periods are defined as 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. (EST) Monday–Friday, and all day on Saturday and Sunday.
    • The Off-Peak Charging credit is approximately $0.105/kWh. Prior to June 1, 2023, the Off-Peak Charging credit was approximately $0.02/kWh.
      • Note: Customers with a third party supplier (TPS) will only receive the distribution portion of the Off-Peak Charging Credit. In this case, the credit will continue to be approximately $0.02/kWh.

It’s interesting to see what people in other parts of the country are paying for power in general.

Puget Sound Energy (PSE) also started an off peak usage program in July. Our base rate was 16¢/kw.

If you signed up that rate went to 29¢ but the off peak went to 9¢ from 9 pm-midnight and 4¢ from midnight-7 am. I still saved about $30 a month using the super off peak rate because the car, lights, and outlets are the only major consumers of electricity in our home, everything else is gas.

That's a great deal! 4 cents/kWh amounts to about $4 to fully charge an extended range battery.

I have used that in other posts. “I can drive 300 miles for less than the cost of a gallon of fuel here. While that same 300 miles in my other car cost $80.”

Our household has been part of this program since fall '22. It was a pleasant surprise once they implemented the additional savings with the off-peak credit-- I think it started in June of '23. That said, since September of '23 PSEG has put the program on pause (at least for some but I assume all)

This is the email our household received on September 7.
Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for your participation in PSE&G’s Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Program. PSE&G’s EV data aggregator is currently experiencing system issues in the processing of EV Off-Peak Charging Credits. As a result, we are temporarily pausing the issuance of Off-Peak Charging Credits for participating customers.

Please be assured that we are working diligently to resolve this issue, and when corrected, you will receive qualified Off-Peak Charging Credits for the impacted time period.

We appreciate your patience. If you have any questions, please email [email protected].

Sincerely,

PSE&G EV Team

Apparently there has been no resolution yet as they sent me the same canned response a few weeks ago. Does anybody know what is going on with the program?

And that attitude is the reason I have solar panels. Back in Early '21 I was trying to see what I could do about an off peak discount before I even got my car, and PSE&G basically told me "get lost" - so I did.

I bought my solar panels and with the energy credits and other incentives I am paying $.09 a kwh until my loan is paid off, and then I'll have free electricity. I should probably call them back and thank them for driving me to solar

Well, it seems the PSE&G data aggregation issue from their vendor has now been resolved, as our latest bill included more than $100 in credits covering the past four or five months of home charging (we don't drive very much, I think it represented about 1,000 kw in charging overall

Hmm, just got our latest bill and I didn’t see anything there. I’ll give them a call.

Huh, had you been getting them before? When did you enroll in the program? I think it took a cycle or two after approval for the credits to start coming. One thing I noticed is that they apparently aren't accepting EnelX chargers anymore. I hope this won't eventually impact existing EnelX charger users like me... it wouldn't make sense for me to buy a ChargePoint just to get the credits again.

I looked again at my bill (after my wife told me she saw something about an EV credit...) and it is there. I got $33 back from Aug 4 to Dec 4. I don't drive all that much and can mostly charge at work at no cost, so don't charge much at home. But good to confirm that I am enrolled and able to take advantage of the low charging rate when I need to charge at home. It's a nice program and the rebate for the install was a nice perk.

So crazy to see some of these power rates. This is all power, year round. Not a special meter for the vehicle only or anything like that -- all home power. I've got a 12kW inverter and 45kWh worth of LFPs that charge super-off-peak.
