It also depends on where you live because a lot of areas have terrestrial repeaters for the satellite signal.
SiriusXM uses terrestrial repeaters? I never knew that. It seems like it would make the radio a lot more complex because it would have to have multiple receivers on different bands, and be able to switch between bands without interruption.

Only in major metropolitan areas. I believe it uses the same frequencies that come from the satellites, so the receiver doesn't know the difference.

Yes, Sirius XM was supposed to roll out 1400 terrestrial repeaters, but came up short when they started to install them.

A lot places had issues with the high power wide band transmissions that interferes with sensitive installations.

Areas that do have them are at metropolitan cities alongside TV/radio broadcast towers.

fun facts...
  • there are ~900 terrestrial repeaters. SXM is actually one of the largest terrestrial broadcast organizations in the world.
  • IF you live in a city of a million, you are almost certainly listening to a terrestrial repeater instead of direct from the satellite.
  • Each terrestrial repeater operates on the order of ~5kW ERP.

Wow! Pretty cool. I wonder how far out into the suburbs the repeater system exists from a major market?
I wonder though, given the continuing cost decrease for cellular data, whether it would make sense to retire the repeater network entirely and just rely on cellular data whenever the satellite isn't visible?

The existing repeaters will last for a couple of decades and are not real expensive to run... they also sync perfectly with the satellite so you don't even know its there. I think they will stick with what they have for a while longer...

However, I don't think there will be another SXM... Streaming changes everything.

There would be issues with that since the streaming component of SXM is about 4 minutes delayed from the satellite component for non-recorded content. ?‍♂?

I’ve noticed that, but that delay can be overcome, I’m sure.

I actually prefer SiriusXM to streaming. Mostly because of the personalities and curated music.
