My home system has a pair of ceiling mounted speakers, which are great. My AVR usually engages all speakers when playing 5.1 material. It’s a delight. I have a midrange system. Sony UBP-800M2, Marantz 6100 AVR, Martin-Logan speakers all around. Not the big electrostatic ones, just bookshelf size.

Haven’t ever used upfiring ones so I cannot compare.

It’s all artificial. Mono, stereo, quad, 5.1, Atmos. However, I think surround is pretty groovy man. To each their own.
Yeah reading that 'it sounds artificial' reply is definitely a first for me and I've had some form of surround at home for 25 years [since the very first DVD-A hit the market]. I'm an engineer, and now I feel cheated and ashamed after enjoying it all these years and having been apparently tricked the whole time. Enlightenment better late than never. 🤣

Your AVR and speakers are fairly good even by snooty audiophile standards, it's a very solid midrange system.

i think so. Someday I’ll upgrade the AVR. A tube AVR would pique my interest.
That's going to depend on YOUR ears. Not really necessary for most, myself included. I can sometimes sense "warmth" in a higher resolution mix but more often than not CD quality is sufficient. Most people's living space is where the greatest benefits in playback quality can be gained. Room acoustics is a science in and of itself.
