My 2021 Mach E has 56K miles and I've never missed maintenance. My car sat in the garage for one week while I was on vacation and the first time I started it back up, a "shift system default" alert popped up as well as "service vehicle" and the wrench appeared on the dash. The app shows a powertrain malfunction. I had no problems shifting and after reading other posts, decided to drive it to the dealership, no problems. My service guy told me that diagnostics show the gear shift doesn't have to be replaced and that it's a programming issue, so this will cost me almost $400. I have an extended warranty. I haven't been able to find anything on this forum showing anyone paying for this fault warning. Is there anyone that can advise me?

If you have an extended warranty, I'd assume that it's covered - but you should be reviewing that information first. And then confirm it with your service department (they may not know that? though it should be tied to the VIN if it's a Ford one, so it should be in their system).

I called Ford about the warranty before I talked to the dealership and I was told it was covered. But the dealer said no parts have to be replaced, so its not a component, which is what the warranty covers.

We had an extended warranty on our Focus Electric and had an issue with the steering rack and also one of the windows would roll up and bounce back.

While talking with service they said that they can look at the window issue, but if it ends up needing calibration/reprogramming to resolve that it would not be covered by the ESP.

Fortunately I was able to fix it reading online about how you calibrate the bounce back safety feature and avoided the fee.

All that is to say, while the ESP was absolutely worth it as that steering rack issue would have cost us over $4k, it was good to learn that module reprogramming and calibration services (like calibrating your 360 cameras) does not appear to be covered by the ESP.

You can call Ford to confirm though and get a final verdict, but based on the experience I had with our service department who has always been honest and good to us, I suspect what they told you is accurate.

Hi there. I would like to take a closer into your Mach-E's error messages/repairs. To get things started, can you please send over a message with your VIN and the name/location of the Ford dealer you have been working with?

What’s a shift system on an EV? Wouldn’t that just be software telling the motor whether to spin forward or backwards and setting the amount of regenerative braking?

Did you ever get this resolved? Did the dealership cover it?
