On occasion, when I leave work (after car has been parked outside in the cold all day) I have noticed that my trip energy usage display will indicate that a percentage (usually a high % to start) of my energy is being used for climate.

This is true even if I have not turned on the heat at all. It was not on when I turned the car off, therefore it was never on at any point since I turned the car back on. Most times that large % at the beginning will dwindle as I drive farther, but mi/KW will remain low as if I am using the heat, which I am not. It seems toi then drain the battery more quickly. Sometimes, if I am at a stop light, I can turn the car off and on and it will reset and be fine, but not always.

This does not happen (only once) when I leave for work in the morning while my car has been parked in my garage all night.

Any insights on why this is happening or what I can do?

Thanks!

The car is heating the battery, which is reflected in the HVAC energy total.

Has anyone doublechecked the math for the miles/kw? I have no reason to doubt it but can’t prove it because of other loads in the house and haveing a hard time isolating charge kw to miles driven. But wondering if someone else has done the math already.

There are sometimes glitches with it, but for the most part, the reported efficiency tracks with the kWh figures from the battery energy control module. In winter a lot more kWh will used for standby heating, so miles driven and kWh used from the wall will not track perfectly.

If you get a obd2 scanner you’ll be able to see things like the Heating system power draw in real time.

From I’ve noticed the car wants to keep the battery over 0c, would make sense after being outside all day it will try to warm it up a bit.
