We just did a RT from Maryland to Arkansas and back in our Mach E. The night before the return I saw there were bug splats and dust on the windshield and thought to myself I should wash the windshield the next morning before heading out. Of course I forgot.

Driving east into the sun the dust and splats were illuminated by the bright morning sun. I only had BlueCruise when I was shaded by a truck or trees. At the first charging stop I cleaned the windshield well and had no issues. I cleaned the windshield before departing the next morning for day two as well. No problems.

Lesson learned!

Shouldn't your windshield washers/wipers do the job? Or was the bug splat too baked on? I carry a bottle of window cleaning spray and a folding/telescoping sponge/squeegee in the frunk to deal with these sorts of things, but I find I very rarely use them since the windshield washer/wipers usually does a good enough job. (That said, if you're driving into the morning sun, you're pretty much screwed no matter what unless your car was expertly detailed no more than five minutes prior.🤣)

Should the wipers/washers do the job? Maybe.
Did the wipers/washers do the job? Nope.

When we did our road trip to South Dakota in 24 the one thing I did not consider was bugs. I had to wash the car 6 times in 7 days. Bugs are not much of a thing here in Western Washington.😬

Yeah a lot of people don't realize just how many sensors are behind the windscreens now! If anything I suggest cleaning the top portion if you're in a hurry, but I like to keep a bottle of window cleaner and some towels in the car.

Good Point, for Bluecruse to work properly, your car needs to be clean. For windshields, stop at a gas station and scrub it with the station's scrub brush.

Unfortunately, bugs aren’t much of a thing in most places anymore. My last complete circle around this island and I had like 3 bug splats on the windshield total.

In the 1940s any nighttime driving outside of winter meant a dirty windshield. Now the occasional splat - always notable.

You have obviously not driven across MT,SD, WY, or ID. They have never been much of an issue in this part of WA.

Eastern Washington, Northern Idaho, far Western Montana, California, and Oregon, recently (in the last year during late spring and summer). The others, no.

There has been a decline in insect population of more than 50% since 1970 according to studies. Insect biomass appears to be declining by 2.5% per year atm.

None of that is particularly good, except for window cleaning. All beyond the scope of this forum though, or this thread.

We keep a squeegee and a spray bottle of window washer in the frunk, because the only thing I miss from gas stations is the window cleaning stations.
