I live in Northern Virginia where EVGo went from one of the more reliable stations and inexpensive to now nearly all stations either out indefinitely or 50kW capability -- and charging, literally, double the price per kWh vs. 2023. Anyone know what's going on with this company? Not even paying for their monthly service (12.99, which is itself a rip-off) brings them online with EA and Tesla chargers.

I'm thinking it could be that EV flu that is going around. Personally, I find it shocking.

Well, I can't speak to what's happening with the stations in Virginia, but EvGo doesn't have a lot of money. Several years ago they introduced a renew and replace program to great fanfare. I'm not sure how that program is going bc they haven't provided any stats on how many stations have been renewed or how much money they put toward repairs.

Even at those prices, they likely may not be profitable when the costs are fully accounted for, especially demand charges. There are a lot of costs to running a network that are not obvious unless you're looking behind the scenes.

They have actually detailed some of those themselves: https://www.evgo.com/blog/dcfc-cost-components-much-more-than-electricity/

EA has also raised their rates in many areas quite substantially as they move to secure their long-term future. I am personally not opposed, as I want our charging providers to thrive and there's only so long they can do that if they don't turn a profit.

EVgo has been my go-to network for reliability over the past year+ in my area, their pricing doesn't change my thoughts on that, I still seek them out.

I realize some people rely on public charging as their default. Price is a concern to them. I do 95% of my charging at home at .12 per kw. When I DCFC I am not concerned about price since my savings are in home charging, if the charger is well located and functional that is my main concern. The cost of installing DCFC is substantial and I’m willing to pay for that. I realize this is counter to what most of the comments will be here, but I’m offering a different take on the subject.
