EV is cheaper than gas, more so if you charge at home.

EV is cheaper in states with lower cost of living than higher cost of living.
That's not entirely correct. EV is cheaper only when charged at home.

Ford Mustang Mach-E Cost to drive EV per state NYT Shared Article Screenshot 2025-10-08 081714

The article breaks down EV costs by state when charging at home vs fast charging.

EV at home is cheaper all states with a range of -$13.53 (Washington) to -$2.98 (Connecticut).

However EV fast charging shows $8.36 more (Arkansas) to -$3.23 (Washington).

So for those who only charge at home having a EV is cheaper than gas.

Those who travel a lot or have to use a fast charger because they can't have a home charger, EV's might not cheaper than gas.

Especially now since gas has dropped to $2.83 here.

This pretty much confirms what I have felt but never exactly confirmed, it is pretty much a wash in California if only doing DCFC.

But what I think a lot of these studies miss is hybrid cars. They show their cost here, but then turned around and only gave EV DCFC to ICE comparison.

If in California and your only goal is cost saving, and you can’t charge at home, hybrids are the best bet, and even if you can charge at home, then a plug in one is probably the cheapest.

And studies like this don’t take into account that people drive to other states.

Luckily, I have free charging at work, so I'm saving all kinds of fuel/electricity costs. Only rarely have to charge at home when the spots are taken throughout the week.
So when you are ready to retire, you tell them to shove the gold watch! You want permission to park overnight and weekends at the Charge spot. You can ride your bike back home and then return in the morning with the bike to pick up the car because Lord knows you’ll need a little exercise anyway. Double benefit exercise and free Miles.

That’s still going to depend on state and your definition of “gas car”.

Even if I DC charge only on my state it is still cheaper than driving my comparable ICE sized vehicle.

Which it has little modifiers to slide for your exact situation.

The vast majority of charging across the EV fleet is done at home. Google search says that 80% of EV charging is done at home... for me the percentage is even higher. So even though DCFC can be more expensive than gas, looked at across all the miles driven DCFC is an edge case.

I tell people DCFC costs are liking fueling up at the fancy rest stop on a Toll highway. You are paying an extra $1 a gallon to not get off the highway, same as DCFC.

This i not my actual travel experience. I did a 4400 mile round trip from MA to TX last year; I calculated the "fuel" costs using mostly Tesla fast charging, with some free hotel charging, cost me the same as if I had driven a 40 mpg gas car. Everyone misses the "free" charging you can get depending on where you stay when calculating costs. https://www.macheforum.com/site/thr...a-charging-sessions-road-trip-to-texas.35176/

Interesting article. I'm also in MA. At $0.344/kWh, charging at home doesn't save much compared to my last ICE car. Luckily, I get free charging at work and try to do at least half of my charging there.
