So finally got myself out to the track this week for one of those all day handling+lapping schools. I've had my GT for just under 2 years now and ~8500 miles, wanted to get a chance to really try it out and see the limits. It was tons of fun, the Mach E brakes and turns remarkably better than I had really imagined for how heavy it is. Probably shaved at least a year off my tires but it was well worth it. Now, my only point of reference was my old V8 GT that I took out 10 years ago, but I'd say I had more fun in this (minus the V8 sound, I do miss that). Slalom was a blast, I even passed the moose test, granted at 30 mph...

We'll get it out of the way, I definitely hit the 5 second limit, and some SoC throttling, plus it was likely over 100 degrees on that pavement, there were plenty of jail bars, but honestly, aside from one uphill straightaway, it was hard to notice, you recover from the turns so fast I was keeping up with many of the cars there.

Some lessons learned:
- Should have explored Unbridled Extend before getting there, it is a school, needed traction control on for the course and didn't think about pressing the button to try and re-enable it so just ended up going back to Engage and leaving it there since that's what I use daily.
- Car Scanner only seems to record data while the screen is on? So tried and failed to get my earlier laps, last set I finally just threw my phone into the center console storage and hoped it'd work, and hey it did.
- Charge every break (assuming you can, this place had a NEMA plug fortunately). The car is definitely happiest above 70% charge, and I did get one set in that range, but I was using 1% of battery for every minute on the track and I only plugged it in for half the breaks.

Got tons of questions about the Mach E, it was the first up close several of the staff had seen. (I was the only EV this class, but they said they get a fair amount of Teslas)

Data!
Got down there early and DC charged so I started off with ~90%, was able to L2 charge off the mobile one for about an hour, I left with 33% SoC, had to charge again to get home ? I knew it was going to be a stretch, so hoping I can figure out a better solution the next time I try.

This was from my last set of laps, about 20 minutes on the track, started these with about 57% battery and it showed vs my first set, but was still quite fast getting out of the turns. Hit 104 mph on this set, I think I saw about 112 when it was at a higher charge.

There happened to be a photographer out there that day, got this nice pan shot.

And finally, here's me getting passed by a Focus RS (not totally stock...) actually would catch up to him in the turns, it was fun for a lap.

And a Mustang GT (very much not stock)

And a Lotus

And a McLaren, which I didn't feel one bit bad about :p

You'll have to take my word that I actually passed several cars, but all passing was on the right and my camera did not get those :)

Still trying to make sense of the other things Car Scanner captured, if anyone is interested I can try to upload the spreadsheet too later.

What track was this? Summit Point near DC will not allow EVs on the track. They apparently don’t feel they can handle a battery fire.

Pacific Raceways in WA, school itself is called ProFormance. Lots of EVs around here, they have 2 Tesla lvl 2 chargers actually and then the 1 NEMA near their setup.

It might be worth picking up a Tesla Tap for these days so you can use the Tesla chargers, if needed.

The NEMA worked well, funny enough, that was my first time using the Ford mobile charger on a 240v, but would definitely have saved some minutes with a Tesla Tap since I had to pack up the cord each time. Can't have anything sliding around in the car :)

That poor HVJB...
Part of doing this now in the warm weather, and DC charging before + after, was to see if I could stress it and get it over with if there was to be a fault. But seemed perfectly happy, fingers crossed it doesn't pop up in a grocery run now, that'd be a bummer :p

Very nice. Did you happen to upgrade the tires or did you do your runs on the stock all seasons?
The wheels look like Performance Wdition wheels, so I assume he has UHP Summers on it (if it’s stock). ??

Same with VIR which is a bummer because those are the 2 tracks I used to go to in my other cars

The wheels definitely look like the flower-power standard GT wheels. You can see the flower petals it motion blur action shot.

Yep, regular GT and stock the all-seasons, they did well, wish I'd taken a before photo of the tread though, they seem a bit more used after this. :)

It's useful but only in certain situations. I think it's better for autocross where you are driving hard around a corner and the ABS brakes chatter like windable toy teeth (none of my other EV did this but they also didn't weigh 5200lbs). It reduces max power according to the manual and it was finicky. It enabled over 80% SoC but for some reason after the battery got hot or SoC was below 80% it refused to engage again.

Yes, the brakes are incredible on the GTPE. Some serious stopping power.

And now makers are making performance BEVs. At least Hyundai is trying with the N. Wonder what limits are being included on that car. I think the next round/generation of high performance BEVs will be even better. Maybe some consumer trickle down tech from the E-racing world. Interesting post. And given you were likely the heaviest vehicle there, admirable results.

Oh is the GT heavier than other trims? I'm pretty sure my Premium is only ~4,837.
