While on a plane at London’s Heathrow airport recently I spotted this Mach e from my window as it pulled up near an adjacent gate. It appears to be some sort of emergency vehicle—looks like the word “ambulance” is on the side and NHS stands for the National Health Service.

On a recent visit to the UK in October, we spotted at least two EMS Mach-e's in the streets of London.

Especially at the airport, seems like a good use case. Longest drive is just a few miles. Should be charging available on-site. While at an incident, you can just leave it running with no emissions letting you get back into a cool or warm car every time.

I wonder if it’s used to transport patients? Even with the seats down, there’s no way you could put an adult laying flat in there, let alone an EMT/attendant next to them.

No. Similar to how many US fire departments will dispatch fire trucks with medical supplies and paramedics, the UK has a model that will dispatch paramedics in cars or even helicopters. An ambulance will trail behind for additional support and transport if necessary.

Interesting, thanks for the replies! Great to see the Mach e put to good use across the pond.

The blurb from Ford themselves is here: https://www.ford.co.uk/experience-ford/news/mach-e-ambulance

Must admit I'm a bit surprised to see there are 'more than 40' of them in the fleet - although that would explain why I see them out and about semi-regularly when I'm travelling through London. Also the bit at the end about how the ambulance service computer system is integrated into the Sync screen is very cool.

Yes these have been around for some time. I posted this photo here a couple of years ago when I was in London. With those colors, this car really stands out in traffic for sure.

I wonder what the thing that looks like a Waymo sensor on the lower rear bumper is?
