Please help me with the cognitive dissonance about buying an extended warranty. Has anyone had an issue that came up during their extended warranty and how was their repair experience and total cost?

I have, 3 months out of my bumper to bumper I had my passenger door start randomly opening while driving. It got to the point it happened every 10 seconds non-stop.

That fix would have been $900, but I only paid the deductible ($100). After the fix the car started throwing random door faults. The dealer came back, picked up my car 3 consecutive weeks for repairs, they replaced the door latch a 2nd time, the wiring harness, then the actuators. All told that work would have been thousands, but it was all included under my original $100 deductible.

I used it for a bunch of ADAS faults, that took 3 visits to fix. Each visit was $100 deductible, but the total cost was around $8k. They replaced cables, camera, pedestrian sensor and two modules.

I used it on my '21 Premium before trading it in with 52K miles. Defective drivers door module, left rear half shaft leaking oil, defective frunk latch. Three somewhat minor things to fix that would have cost more than the $2150 I paid for the warranty. It was an 8 year, 100K warranty and when I traded it in, I cancelled it and received back around $800 for the unused portion.

That’s amazing that you got a partial refund! Did you get a new extended for the new MME?

I've always gotten a refund if I traded the car back in before the warranty was up. However if you sell the car privately, you can either cancel the warranty and get a refund or let the warranty go with the car. The new owner must pay around $100 I think for a transfer fee. If the new owner sells the car prior to the warranty expiring, they cannot get a refund. Only the original purchaser can.

Yes I did buy another warranty as I plan to keep this one longer than 3 years but you never know. Depends on what is available in two years when my lease is up. If nothing MUCH better than what I have, I'll be keeping it until there is.

For my current '24, I purchased from Granger. They have a dedicated website just for Ford Protect ESP's (https://www.grangerfordprotect.com/). It has 6 easy steps. Vehicle info, Vehicle details, Select a Plan, Plan options, Conformation, Checkout. You either pay in full or use their 18 month payment plan. If you have Ford Reward Points, you can use them during checkout. I had 100,400 points which amounted to $502 that I applied to my 7 year, 100K, $50 deductible PremiumCare Plan. Total price after applying the Ford Reward Points was $1663 which included the $70 interior/exterior lighting option. This entire process takes less than 5 minutes to complete.

Of course people have used it. Some have had it pay off, but most don't, because extended warranties are a "house wins" product, meaning that Ford makes a profit selling them. Huge profit.

Nothing amazing about it. What is amazing are the tens (hundreds) of thousands that buy extended warranties, then sell their vehicles and don't cancel for a refund. Simply shocking.

Anyone have advice on whom to buy warranty protection from and when to buy it? Do I buy it while my 2023 GTPE is still covered or wait until it is almost at the 3year mark?

Granger Ford, they have a thread and an online shopping tool. For me it was cheaper to buy within the first year and prices are always rising. I paid $1600 for 8 yr/100k premiumcare in 2022, I think it is over 2k now.

Granger, Flood and Zeigler are popular discount Ford Extended Warranty Dealers here on this forum. I personally have bought from Granger and Flood and both have been great to deal with.

You should get it before your 3 year/36K mile factory warranty is up and I would get is now as prices rise about every 6 months.

Not sure this will apply, the warranty was a fraction the cost of an ice warranty (which I have never purchased) but also never had a car where automated doors fail and cost $1k alone to fix.

Did the 8 year clock start immediately or after 3year is up?

Doesn't work that way. 8 year warranty is from the time of purchase so you are actually only getting 5 additional years.

No, they are not a fraction of the cost. Go price an F-150 vs a Lightning. I will do it right now.

Edit - Granger Ford - 2024 Lightning, 10 year, $100 deductible, $3,620.
2024 F-150, same terms, $4,115.

EV is CHEAPER.

All Ford extended warranties start on the day the vehicle was put into service.
