Being an Apple user since my Apple IIe, I am pretty excited about this, and the tighter integration of my phone and the car. The CarPlay phone as a key capabilities looked pretty cool too.

I'd rather it be Google Maps. I practically live on Google Maps.

It could be both, its just that today was Apple's big developer conference (well virtually) so the big news today is Apple.

(Although I think google already did theirs...)

I also live by Google Maps and Street View.

I REALLY use Waze a LOT - yes I know that is Google. I turn it on every morning on my 45 minute drive to work, and on my way home. It has saved me a lot of time re-routing around accidents, and probably $ in tickets too.

I'm with you on Waze and Google Maps. I don't even have Maps on my iPhone. I got tired of its lousy directions -- and I'm a dedicated Mac user!

Yup, Waze is definitely a life saver. Last Tuesday I had to drive into the office for the first time in 3 months, and there were 5 different speed traps on the NJ Turnpike

I've always wanted an easy way to "push" a destination from Google Maps on my phone to the nav system in the car. I do all the searching on my phone (like menus, reviews, etc) to choose a place. One button on the phone app for "set as destination in car" would be perfect.

But I guess as long as the car has easy (free) live up-to-date mapping with voice control, that's pretty easy to set the destination after looking one up on the phone.

If the implementation of Apple Car Play in the Mach E runs your personal implementation of Google Maps that will be simple. TBD.

I used to do this all the time in my C-Max. It was so complicated but sort of elegant given the restrictions. Since it didn't have built-in cell modem, the car would use my phone to dial a 1-800 number which would then modulate the data over the voice line (i.e., modem) to download the Nav destination. They shut SYNC services down a few years ago though.

Edit: Below describes what Zhackwyatt said above in a little bit more detail...

Actually: My Ford Touch used to have that, sort of. They had integration with MapQuest (yeah remember them). You could plan a route on the MapQuest website and then click on "Send to Car" and after some cellphone hokey pokey the navigation would pop up on MFT (On the MQ website you'd type in your cell phone # then in the car you would hit the sync button and say "services" which would make the car, using your cell phone, call Ford's "Sync Services". When it answered it would say "I have a map transfer from mapquest would you like to download it?" if you answered "yes" the route would popup on the nav). Yeah it isn't a single click but once you got the hang of it; it went pretty quick.

I have an old blog post about how to do it (circa 2013), except that all my images aren't there for various reasons :(.
https://spareelectrons.wordpress.com/2013/10/06/where-ever-you-go-there-you-are/

With Google I've found that if I've done the search on my phone, when I plug in the phone into the car Android Auto's maps will show my recent search as the first suggestion on the maps when I tap on the box to search. If I have Chrome, and my phone both logged into the same gmail account then this also works with maps in the browser (search something in the browser then Android Auto shows that search in the car). (This is all using Android Auto in the Bolt.)

Apple is pushing the EV route planning but CarPlay allows you to use google maps or Waze. That said, people who poopoo’d Apple Maps when introduced might be surprised today. I find Google and Apple to be on par regarding the number of times they screw up directions. And between the more intuitive interface and expanding features, Apple has made up a lot of ground on google maps.

All that considered, any new car I buy from here on out has to have CarPlay.

Holy crap, that sounded like it was a challenge!
