Since the program launched last week, i am not sure how others are experiencing the program. It is suppose to be a point of sale program where the rebate is taken off at the time of car purchase. Has any one experienced the dealer actually deducting the rebate at the time of purchase? I have heard some dealers are obtaining the rebate from NJ before releasing the car to the customer. How long does the rebate approval take?

I just did this TODAY. It's SUPER simple for the customer. Really, the only thing you have to do is, first, call the dealer to make sure they've set it up in their system. All dealers have to register in the NJ ChargeUp dealer portal before being eligible to apply the rebate. It's POS so there is nothing for you to do, except make sure it's in all the paperwork. They get the rebate later from the state, not you.

Luckily, my dealer had already done a few deals using the portal in the last week. They take the incentive right off the top -- you just have to sign some paperwork that you'll keep the car for 3 years, etc.

Of course, the $5K stops at $45K, then becomes $2K. That's a big drop for just one option and you can't negotiate the sale price down to under $45K--MSRP is what it's based on.

I grabbed a base model to get the full $5K. There aren't a lot of them in the state and they're going fast. I had to hustle to get mine. It's definitely the best deal on an EV around, because you're getting $5K off + $7,500 from the feds. Unreal.

thanks for the reply - which dealer did you go to if you don't mind me asking?

Does the car need to be registered in the state in order to qualify for the incentive?

yes, and you have to have a NJ license, live in NJ, and keep it registered for 3 years afterward.

Yes -- and there is an agreement to keep it in the state for a couple years I believe. There was a lot of fine print. You have to buy it from a NJ dealership, not out of state.

I need a clarification: is this rebate in addition to the State of NJ new vehicle sales exemption? I understand that also in NJ there is no inspection required for Ev's, i.e. normally 5 years initial for new ICE car and annually thereafter.

Yep - in addition. You’ll pay no sales tax and get a point-of-sale rebate off the car price at participating dealerships. I didn’t even get an inspection sticker on my MME, yet they put one on my boyfriend’s Kona EV, so unsure what is actually supposed to happen there. But no actual inspection needed.

ETA: I just looked at his sticker. It’s white and says 7-26. So I’m pretty sure he doesn’t need that sticker since he’s not going to need an inspection in 2026. Unless it’s for law enforcement purposes? Curious if other NJ EV drivers have a sticker.

No sticker on my Mach E. Best I can tell is EV's end up with stickers when the dealer's prepper is on autopilot. Like when they offer us free oil changes..... ;-)

I've got one, AutoPilot. Plus I'm able to claim it's a hybrid and get less sh** from die-hard Mustang devotees.

The registration came with an inspection sticker but the dealer just gave it to me. I threw it in the glove box with the registration in case a cop decides to get grumpy about it.

exactly. the dated sticker on the window will cause more problems when it expires and the cops are on autopilot and pull him over for an expired inspection.

As others said, EVs are exempt from inspection in NJ, so no inspection sticker required. My dealer put one on (even though I asked not to ahead of delivery). We scraped it off. Agree it's an autopilot thing.

Still learning something new every day! I mean, makes sense no inspection once DMV went to emissions only. What emissions?

I guess I'll really be pushing my luck with NO sticker and NO front license plate. Haven't put on a front license plate in 10 years.

You haven't been pulled over for that? I wish I'd done that. I thought it would be asking to be pulled over for every little infraction (10 mph over the limit and no front license plate - boom, he pulls the trigger).

i never want to say never because if I tell you the truth, it will then happen.

but actually no, since you asked. I have even been pulled over for other things but that never even came up about the front license plate. Just took my older car through inspection without one and no problems.

YMMV
