I have transported a 12' long by 10' wide rolled carpet remnant home from a store in my Mini Cooper. It was hangin out the back hatchback and actually sticking out the passenger side window. However, you were MUCH more safety conscious than I was - neither red flag nor bungie cords did I have with me at the time.

I dug around and found a photo I took at the time:

That's my backpack hanging on the back hatch to keep it partly closed so it wouldn't flop around too much. I only had to go about 4 miles to get home.
