A big difference between TurboTax download / CD and CreditKarma, or other online sites, is that I do my return on my PC. The completed return is then uploaded to the Intuit / TurboTax servers directly to the IRS. It's not stored online by TurboTax.

Right. Exactly as I said. Return is uploaded to the servers that send it to the IRS, using the desktop software. Using the online version, it is on different servers accessible by a lot more people.
